Holiday Meals for Officers

Residents invited to donate money, food and time to provide holiday fare to West Springfield District Police working Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

The Citizens’ Advisory Committee each year provides holiday meals at the station for officers who must be away from their families on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Residents are invited to participate in what the Citizens' Advisory Committee (CAC) calls, "This outpouring of community appreciation."

The Roll Call Room at the West Springfield District Station is transformed into a smorgasbord of holiday fare with all the trimmings.  The CAC Executive Board and members serve the incoming and outgoing day and night shifts.  "This is an opportunity to interact with the police officers who serve our community," said CAC Vice Chairman Bud Durand. "It’s certainly a much nicer venue for meeting the officers than behind the wheel of your family car."

"We are on hand from 11:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. and again from 5:00 p.m. through 8:00 p.m., shuttling food between the galley and the serving tables, keeping the food warm, cleaning up, and interacting with the officers," said Durand.

In addition to food purchased by the CAC and donated by local restaurants, CAC members provide homemade items.  Monetary donations from members and nonmembers help defray the cost of the food and supplies purchased for the events.

To support Holiday Meals for Officers, bring a check to a CAC meeting or mail it to "Citizens' Advisory Committee, West Springfield District Station, 6140 Rolling Road, Springfield, VA 22152."  Checks should be made out to "Howard Lincoln, CAC Treasurer."

The West Springfield Police District Citizens’ Advisory Committee meets at the station at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month, except for July and August.  Meetings are open to all, and serve to foster a strong police - community partnership.

Meetings usually include a presentation from the various Washington area law enforcement agencies or emergency services providers, a report on any recent criminal activity in the West Springfield area and the corresponding police responses, as well as crime prevention notes, upcoming public events and other information of interest to the citizens of the district.
