Perkins Wins GOP Primary in 11th District Race

Retired Army colonel beats Herndon traffic engineer Ken Vaughn with 60-plus percent of the vote. Perkins will face Gerald Connolly in general election for 11th congressional district.

UPDATE: Retired Army Col. Chris Perkins of Lorton has won the GOP primary in the 11th congressional district with about 60 percent of the vote. He will now do battle with incumbent Democrat Congressman Gerald Connolly in November.

"I know my words sound almost contrived, but I'm feeling so humble right now," Perkins said as he greeted a house full of well-wishers Tuesday night. "Because all of these people put their faith in me." He thanked his wife Petra for her contributions to the campaign.

Gov. Bob McDonnell weighed in Tuesday night with congratulations:

"Eleventh district Republicans tonight nominated a great candidate in Chris Perkins," he said in a news release sent out at about 10:45 p.m. "Chris understands the importance of keeping taxes low and making government more efficient and effective. I know he will run an energetic and upbeat campaign."

Democrat incumbent Connolly called Perkins to congratulate him on his win. "He's looking forward to having many spirited dialogues on the issues as often as possible," Perkins said.

Ken Vaughn also called. "He ran a solid campaign," Perkins said of his opponent in the primary.

"I'm going to give my staff one day off and then we're going to pull all my signs from the medians," Perkins said. His campaign made a commitment not to put out signs until the week before the primary, then put out 1,600 in one night.

Perkins' apparent star power beat contender Vaughn, 44, a traffic engineer who was motivated to run to help do something about the economy. Vaughn, his wife and twin sons live in Herndon.

Perkins, 55, who touts his experience in the military, received an endorsement from former Congressman Tom Davis.

Perkins is now a self-employed defense consultant. He became a grandfather about two weeks ago with the birth of the family's first grandchild, by his daughter Alex. His son recently graduated from West Point.

The Washington Post called the primary for Perkins Tuesday at 8:38 p.m.

Primary watchers will be keeping an eye tonight on the GOP primary in Virginia's 11th congressional district, where Lorton resident and retired Army officer  is up against Herndon traffic engineer .

Vaughn is expected at an election results party at Icons in Fairfax City but only volunteers are there at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday.

The winner of today's primary will run against Congressman Gerald Connolly.

Vaughn, 44, lives in Herndon with his wife and twin sons, decided to run for Congress due to his concern about the economy, he told Patch earlier this year. Vaughn is keeping an eye on the results tonight at a party in Fairfax City.

Perkins, 55, who touts his experience in the military, received an endorsement from former Congressman Tom Davis. Perkins is now a self-employed defense consultant.

In Perkins' military career, mainly as a Green Beret (a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces), he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his role in an attempt to rescue a downed aircrew during Operation Desert Storm. After retiring from the Army as a full Colonel in 2006, Perkins was hired by the U.S. Coast Guard to help establish a maritime quick reaction force to help secure the nation's coastline.

A native of Vermont, Perkins lives in Lorton with wife Petra; the two are parents to daughter Alex, a graduate of Virginia Tech, and son Nick, a cadet at West Point.

Republican Keith Fimian, a businessman from Oakton, came , in his second attempt in 2010, but is now reportedly considering a run for lieutenant governor. Fimian lost to Connolly by less than 1,000 votes or .4 percent.

Wow, look at the breakdown so far. In the places where rich federal bureaucrats and lobbyists live, RINO Perkins is getting nearly two-thirds of the vote, but in the places where Americans live, conservative Vaughn is getting nearly two-thirds of the vote!

"Rich Federal bureaucrats?" Where do they live?
David B. Levenstam June 13, 2012 at 01:50 PM
The DC suburbs, which are the wealthiest suburbs in the country.
Jim Daniels June 13, 2012 at 02:38 PM
So in your view folks living in the DC suburbs are not "Americans?"
Groovis Maximus June 13, 2012 at 04:36 PM
I'm pretty sure that the folks living on the GS scale aren't the ones living in the million dollar homes in the DC suburbs.

Seems David has a little bit of an anger problem plus he is a sore loser !! Ken won two precincts... one of which was his own neighborhood. David throws around the name RINO too but it would seem he has no idea what that actually means. Anyway..he must be going to crawl back under his rock now.
David B. Levenstam June 14, 2012 at 12:23 AM
It seems that Carole as a little bit of a stupidity problem as she can't make a logical argument and only throw insults at conservatives. It's RINOs like her that enable liberals like Obama. Thanks for 4 years of recession, Carole!
David B. Levenstam June 14, 2012 at 12:25 AM
Carole, the very fact that you're attacking me, a conservative Republican, instead of a liberal like "Groovis Maximus," demonstrates the point that RINOs enable liberals. Well done!

David, While not a first, it happens infrequently. I actually agree with you although I am a Democrat. I said it before in a post which I have copied to here, but the Republican party got snookered but good unless they wanted to run a RINO in the first place. We are going to trounce you this November like we did last year. The economy is not as bad so our machine is going to steam roll the district. Oh and one more thing, I heard and read some emails through a source from some Perkins supporters to Vaughn supporters they were trying berate for their views. I've can't believe how self-righteous and misinformed these supporters are of their own candidate, especially some witch named "Alma." You have my condolences David. Previous comment below.

Original post below ----------------------- I really have no idea how you republicans can get snookered in so completely. I am a Democrat. Let me put that out there. I am however a realist. My father was a Democrat. My father's father was a Democrat. Granted my party is no longer the party of Kennedy but as least we fight for what we believe in. One of my sparring partners lost the fight when I told him Gerry believes in prochoice and fights for prochoice. Your Perkins said early on in the race that he is not prolife and he is not prochoice. Huh? He explains he believes in prolife but will not stand in the way of a womens right to choose, it's between her, her family, her God, her doctor, as long as taxpayer funds aren't used. What? That's pro-choice. Don't believe it. My college classmate works in Connolly's camp and they have the tape of him saying exactly the above a couple of times. This integrity campaign as a military officer is garbage. I can't wait til that hits the airwaves if Perkins wins. November will be in the bag for us. And what I also hate are arrogant military officers who think the only people who should have guns are the military and the police. He claims he supports the Constitution which does say no gun control. Now I think the Constitution is out dated but your Perkins is supportive of limitations at the state and local level. Again, integrity. He wins tomorrow, you guys got snookered but good.

Congratulations Col. Perkins..I am proud of your service and dedication you have bestowed on our country. I am reading some very whiney comments that continue to plague the message boards the democrats are on the run..Your incumbent and so rightfully put ( Pelosi clone) are hopefully on their way out! I have read some military bashers who spew the hatred since they know nothing about the military..and ignorant comments about the Constitution being out dated! Who are these ne’er-do-wells!! ?? Again thank you we wish you the very best, and pray we can restore some civility back into the great state of Virginia and this great country Simper fi

Will you be leaving your campaign signs up through election day? Specifically, the ones illegally placed in the median of Wiehle Ave north of the toll road. Let me know.
