Public Hearing on Terra Centre Expansion

The school's expansion plan includes the long-lobbied for flashing wink-o-matic safety signal.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on an application to expand   The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Auditorium, Lobby Level, Government Center Building, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.

Those who wish to be placed on the speakers’ list for the hearing, or to check on whether the status of the hearing has changed, should call the Office of the Clerk to the Board of Supervisors at 703-324-3151.

Braddock District Supervisor John Cook to gather input for the planned expansion.  The Fairfax County Planning Commission subsequently held a public hearing on the proposal, and, on May 31, unanimously recommended the application be approved by the Board of Supervisors.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) plans to enlarge Terra Center by 19,868 square feet to add a library, kindergarten, lobby and classrooms. The renovation will also expand the kiss and ride area and modify the play areas.

FCPS officials have agreed to a development condition requiring placement of a flashing wink-o-matic signal for use during school arrival and departure times. This signal was recommended by the Burke Centre Parkway Pedestrian and Motorist Safety Task Force.

The county has been awarded a Safe Routes to School grant to construct additional pedestrian safety improvements, including a median refuge island.

The Board of Supervisors is expected to approve the plan.  Phased construction would begin in early 2013 and last about 24 months.
