Sept. 11, 2001: Burke Remembers

Local residents and officials recall their experience and the decade since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

This month marks the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that killed thousands at the Pentagon, the World Trade Center in Manhattan and in a field in Shanksville, Penn.

Patch spoke with police and fire officials about their experience that day, but we're very interested in your photos and comments, too!

Tell us where you were Sept. 11, 2001 and what your thoughts are now that 10 years have passed. You can upload your own photo through the green 'manage your photos & videos' link above.

Robinson Secondary School with the help of the SGA and DECA did a school wide assembly in the field house on 9/13/01 in memory of lost Americans. Over 5,000-school and community members were present -- Congressman Davis, The Robinson Marching Band, Chorus and the entire student body attended. Very touching day for the community. This was quite an amazing example of organization as the students produced the event in 48 hours.

At Laurel Ridge Elementary School, they didn't tell us anything, but all of my classmates kept disappearing. I was one of the only kids left at the end because my parents were under lock-down at work, and they figured that the school was probably as safe of a place as any. It was really scary, because I could tell that the teachers were panicking and something was obviously going on, but we didn't know what. I was 10 years old at the time, so that's what I remember more than anything else. Everything after I got home was just a blur. My mom was so scared, because my dad worked for the FAA then. My mom worked in a school (where she still works now), so she was in the same position as the teachers at my school.

Wow, Jennifer. I can hear the fear and confusion of the ten-year-old girl in what you write. Thank you for sharing.
