Local historian and author Lynne Garvey-Hodge will speak on the women's suffrage movement and Progressive Era in the Burke, Lorton, and Clifton areas. Refreshments will be served.
The Burke Historical Society is a group of local enthusiasts interested in exploring and preserving the history of Burke. We are seeking new members who share this interest. No commitment is needed; all are welcome!
Ms. Garvey-Hodge is in her fourth consecutive term on the Fairfax County History Commission, where she currently sits on the Publications, Awards, and Ethnic & Oral History committees. A resident of Clifton, she has served in officer’s and chairperson’s roles for the Clifton Betterment Association, Clifton Oral History Project, Clifton History Commission, and the town’s Annual Historic Candlelight Tour and 100th anniversary celebration. She has given presentations and walking tours on the history of Clifton to a multitude of local groups, and has re-enacted suffragist Mrs. Robert Walker for televised programs and community events including the dedication of the suffragist memorial in Occoquan Regional Park.

Ms. Garvey-Hodge is author of Clifton for the Images of America series, and a co-founder and officer of the Fairfax County Cemetery Preservation Association. She presented research to the County History Commission to secure funding for the historic marker at Ivakota Farm, and to the Board of Supervisors to produce the Commission’s “Speaker’s Bureau.” She spearheaded the launch of the First Annual Fairfax County History Conference in 2005, and has chaired the conference every succeeding year. She holds a BFA in art history and a Master of Public Administration in human resources from the University of Colorado, as well as a Master of Theological Studies from Wesley Theological Seminary.
