Burke Historical Society meeting

Please join us at our general meeting, 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, **May 20th**.  Jon Vrana and Bill Sheads will speak about the history of logging in the Burke area.

**Please note that we are meeting on May 20th instead of the last Sunday of the month, in order to avoid conflicts with Memorial Day weekend.**

Jon Vrana is the president of the Burke Historical Society and chair of our Research Committee.  When he is not busy with Society business and historical research, he stays active with a number of like-minded organizations, including the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum and a living history group.  His research of late has focused on the importance and operations of logging during the mid-19th century.

Delbert (Bill) Sheads was born in Burke in 1923.  His father and uncle had founded a timbering business and operated a mobile saw mill at various sites within Fairfax, Fauquier, and Culpeper Counties, and it was in Fairfax that young Bill worked for the family business, scouting for, selecting, cutting, and hauling the timber from which much of the construction in Northern Virginia and Washington would be made.

The Burke Historical Society is a group of local enthusiasts interested in exploring and preserving the history of Burke.  We are seeking new members who share this interest.  No commitment is needed; all are welcome!
