Lake Braddock Senior Receives Two Prestigious Awards

Elisabeth Clymer receives $2,500 P.E.O. STAR Scholarship and Prudential Spirit of Community Medallion.

senior Elisabeth Clymer raised more than $35,000 to support the purchase of more than 17,500 mosquito nets to protect children in Africa from malaria.  This work earned her selection as a Distinguished Finalist in the 2012 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

In addition, Clymer was awarded a $2,500 P.E.O. STAR Scholarship based on excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for future success.  She was nominated by P.E.O. Chapter Z of Alexandria, Va.

Clymer will be honored for both accomplishments at Lake Braddock's senior awards ceremony on Tuesday, June 12, at 3 p.m.

Clymer started her fund-raising project nearly four years ago.  She collects individual donations through her church and sponsors swim-a-thons to raise funds for the organization Nothing But Nets.  Clymer is attending the University of North Carolna to study public health medicine.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), represent the United States’ largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service.

The P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Sisterhood is one of the pioneer societies for women, founded on January 21, 1869, by seven students at Iowa Wesleyan College.  Today the group is an international philanthropic and educational organization which promotes increased educational opportunities for women.
