Letter to the Editor: Why Residents Should Vote 'Yes' on School Bond Referendum

Dear Editor,

I am writing to encourage all Fairfax County residents to vote “yes” on the school bond referendum appearing on the Nov. 5 ballot. These critical bonds are the primary funding source for the construction and renovation of our schools as well as an essential investment in the heart of our community.

It is important to note that the building and renovation of our schools are not financed through the school system’s operating budget, but through bond referendums.  Each referendum is developed with the combined input of the community, school board, and school staff, who together develop funding priorities for construction and renovation of our school infrastructure.

More than a place for instruction, our school buildings across the county are used as places for community gatherings and activities. Each year, more than 2,000 community organizations use these facilities for recreation activities, teen centers, and child-care programs. Last year alone, over 184,000 meals were served to senior citizens in school buildings across the county. Chances are, you will be casting your vote from a facility whose construction was funded by a bond of years past.

Our school facilities are invaluable in ways beyond educating our children, which is why it is so important to invest in the future of Fairfax County. On November 5, I encourage everyone in our community to vote “yes” on the school bond referendum
