Robinson Tops Lake Braddock 24-7 in Rivalry Game

Patrick Baker rushes for 145 yards in victory, Rams grab second victory of the season

Payback is sweet. Payback against a bitter rival is even sweeter. waited 11 months to repay for dispatching them from the playoffs last November, in a hard fought 24-23 losing effort. Friday evening was their chance.

Robinson hosted Lake Braddock in Friday night football action. The Rams avenged last year’s postseason loss and defeated crosstown rival Lake Braddock 24-7, giving the team their second win of the season.

“It feels great. We started off 1-5 and it could have been easy for them to hang their heads. Braddock is a good football team,” said first-year Robinson head coach Trey Taylor.

“We’re on our third quarterback this season and made some changes on offense. These kids are resilient and they want to win. It’s fun to coach them.”

Robinson (2-5, 0-2 Concorde District) and Lake Braddock (3-4, 1-3 Patriot District) entered Friday’s game with medicore records, and both salivated for a win. On a night when Robinson honored its seniors, it was only fitting that Patrick Baker came up big when needed most.

Taylor turned to Baker, his third quarterback this season, to revive the offense. Baker did not disappoint. The senior rushed for 145 yards and one touchdown, while also throwing for 55 yards. The quarterback, who also plays defense, intercepted a pass from Lake Braddock quarterback Tyler Quigley, returning it for 15 yards.

Robinson’s defense was stout for most of the evening, holding Lake Braddock’s talented Quigley brothers (quarterback Tyler and wide receiver Tanner) and offense to just seven points. Tyler Quigley was also intercepted twice on the evening by Baker and Ethan Steen.

Baker was assisted by fellow senior running backs Tyrek Worrell and Joe Meier. Worrell, who leads the team in rushing with 462 yards, rushed for 50 yards on the evening and scored the game-clinching five-yard touchdown scamper. Meier rushed for 48 yards on 15 carries and scored Robinson’s first touchdown of the game, which came courtesy of a one-yard second quarter run.

Robinson’s lead was threatened in the third quarter when Quigley effortlessly drove the Bruins down the field to score in just over two minutes. He hit wide receiver Nick Weiler on a five-yard touchdown pass that cut Robinson’s lead to 10 points, but that was as close as the Bruins would get.

Although Taylor joined Robinson’s staff at the tail end of his seniors’ high school careers, he wanted to do everything he could to put them in the best position to defeat their main rival and experience the joy of winning on Senior Night.

“It was the most important thing to me.” I know the rivalry here and you only get one chance,” said Taylor.

“Tonight being senior night, it just had all the trimmings of a big game. So I wanted to do everything I could to make sure that we got that win. They did a fantastic job.”
