Two Lake Braddock Students Hack School's Computers

Brothers accessed Blackboard and other learning sites of two Spanish teachers.

Two brothers hacked into two Spanish teachers' websites during Fairfax County Public School's winter break.

The websites were hosted on Blackboard, an online education platform used by teachers in hundreds of school districts across the country to post materials and communicate with students and parents.

According to Burke Patch sources, a bogus homework assignment and extra credit opportunity were posted, content was erased or changed, and "malicious" and "vulgar" emails were sent.

According to a letter from the boys' parents, the students "even posted the hacking procedure on a web page that may have led to further hacking by others."

In a letter to parents, one Spanish teacher said the material lost in the hacking had been complied over ten years.  "Rebuilding those activities will not be accomplished quickly or easily," she wrote.  "The final result is that both Blackboard AND Conjuguemos will be unavailable to my students until further notice."

Mary Shaw, public information officer for Fairfax County Public Schools', said, "We will not identify the students or give out information on the disciplinary actions, if any, that are taken.  That is confidential information."

Burke Patch is awaiting further word from FCPS regarding the incident.
