Get Your Cheer On: Special Olympics Virginia Seeks Volunteers

The Special Olympics Virginia basketball team will compete in games and other activities at Robinson Secondary School on Saturday.

If cheering is one of your favorite pastimes, then you're in luck: Special Olympics Virginia is coming to Robinson Secondary School this weekend and they're looking for volunteers to help cheer on the basketball team.

The “Volunteer to Cheer” event, which is part of FANQUEST and presented by Booz Allen Hamilton, starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Robinson. Robinson Secondary is located at 5035 Sideburn Road in Fairfax.

The basketball team will hit the courts for basketball contests, a shoot-out and an all-star game featuring two local Special Olympics teams, according to a press release. Event organizers will also be giving out prizes, "running zany relays and pumping up the crowd in support of Special Olympics."

Anyone interested in volunteering can sign up online at www.volunteer2cheer.com.

Check-in will be at the “Volunteer to Cheer” table at the gym entrance. All volunteers will be able to make posters and signs from available materials. Cheer sticks will also be handed out to help volunteers cheer on the athletes.

Volunteers will also have an opportunity to "sign an 'R-Word' pledge to eliminate the word 'retard' or 'retarded,' and take responsibility for the power words have on others," according to a news release.
