Girls Basketball Players Compete in All-Star Games

Annual event at Oakton High School features senior players from Northern Virginia

The top female basketball players in Northern Virginia faced off at Oakton High School on Sunday for the seventh annual Northern Virginia Suburban Classic.

The Northern Virginia Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association hosted two all-star games, which featured seniors teams all across the region. Logan Russell of Lake Braddock Secondary was involved in the game, playing for the Concorde/Patriot All Stars team.

“It’s a great opportunity for the seniors to play with and against kids that they’ve been playing against for years, there was a lot of good basketball played here today,” said Oakton High head coach Fred Priester, who coached the Concorde/Patriot All-Stars team and has served as NVWBCA president for more than 20 years. “This gives them an opportunity to play one more time before their friends and family, and then they’re going to be moving on to college and for some of them their careers are over.”

The Prince William All-Stars trounced the National/Liberty All Stars in the second game of the day with a whopping 76-41 victory. Dani Ferguson of Gar-Field High School led the Prince William team with 18 points and she shared co-MVP honors with Kierra Graham of Edison High School, who led the National/Liberty team with 18 points.

The NVWBCA also presented one of the Liberty District players, Sarah Kleinknecht of Langley High School, with a $1,000 scholarship as the winner of an essay contest. One other player who was unable to attend the game also received a scholarship award.

“For the last eight years we’ve given away $1,000 scholarships each year based on players’ academics, community service commitments and an essay on what they’ve learned for the values of the game,” Priester said.
