How Did a West Springfield Alumnus Do in the Super Bowl?

Catch up on how Jeremy Kapinos did at the big game.

Oftentimes in big games, backup players and kickers want to avoid the spotlight, because the spotlight usually only falls on them when they make a colossal mistake. That wasn’t an issue for Pittsburgh Steelers punter Jeremy Kapinos (West Springfield, 2002), as Ben Roethlisberger and the offense committed three turnovers, and the defense allowed MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers to rack up 338 total yards of offense.

Kapinos punted three times with a net average of 45.0 yards, well above his career net average of 34.5 yards. His best effort came near the end of the third quarter after a Steelers drive stalled at their own 21-yard line. Kapinos sent a kick 56 yards to the Packers 23. In addition to not returning the punt, the Packers committed a penalty that backed them up to their own 13.

He also had punts of 43 and 36 yards, including one touchback.

Kapinos spent much of 2010 flying across the country to try out for teams before finally getting picked up for one game by the Indianapolis Colts in week eight, and then by the Steelers in week 14. For a guy that had been mowing grass at a golf course three years ago and is likely to be released by the Steelers soon as regular starting punter Dan Sepulveda recovers from a torn ACL, this may have been the audition he needed.
