Storms cause delays, but most games go on

Although there were some complications with the Northern Region games last night due to thunderstorms, all but one of eight games were played.

Advancing to the semi finals in the region for the boys are Woodson, West Springfield and Langley high schools. For the girls Chantilly, Woodson, Centreville and McLean will move forward.

BOYS

Washington-Lee vs. Woodson. After a goalless 70 minutes the Washington-Lee Generals went up 2-0. The Woodson Cavaliers were able to defend their net the rest of the game, keeping the Generals at two goals.

Lake Braddock vs. Oakton. After a transformer blew out at Oakton High School the Lake Braddock vs. Oakton game was postponed. The tentative date for the makeup game is Tuesday, May 31.

West Springfield vs. Herndon. Due to rain the West Springfield vs. Herndon game was stopped with more than 24 minutes left in the first half. They waited it out and eventually got back on the field. The Hornets battled to keep their season going, but in the end West Springfield took the game, becoming only the second team to beat the Hornets this year.

Mount Vernon vs. Langley. Mount Vernon and Langley fought tooth and nail for a win, but Langley ended up taking the game with a final score of 2-1 in double overtime. Langley scored in the first half and with a little over two minutes left the game was delayed due to lightning. About an hour later the game restarted and Mount Vernon scored with 20 minutes left in the game. During the first overtime Mount Vernon missed two good chances, and Langley was able to score in the second overtime.

 

Washington-Lee will play next on June 1 at 5 p.m. at Robinson Secondary School. They will play the winner of Lake Braddock vs. Oakton game. West Springfield and Langley will head to the semi finals at Robinson Secondary School on June 1 at 7 p.m.

 

GIRLS

Chantilly vs. Stonebridge. Chantilly and Stonebridge girls battled it out in Ashburn, with the Chantilly girls going up 3-1. Chantilly’s Laila Gray scored two goals in nine minutes in the second half. The game was delayed because of lightning with more than 16 minutes left but did not resume, even though the storm eventually moved out.

Woodson vs. Oakton. No goals were scored in the first half of the Woodson vs. Oakton game as each team defended their net. Woodson was able to kick one in with about 18 minutes left in the second half. Each team had a couple chances at the net, but Woodson held onto the lead, sending them to the semi finals. 

Lake Braddock vs. Centreville. Much of the Lake Braddock vs. Centreville game was fought midfield, and after Lake Braddock missed a couple good chances to score Chantilly found the net first. After an hour and a half rain delay, the girls got back on the field to finish the game. Centreville scored twice more to go 3-0 and head to the semi finals.

Washington-Lee vs. McLean. The McLean girls were able to take the lead early, scoring three goals in the first half. All three goals were kicked in by Melissa Downey. McLean held onto their lead sending them to the semi finals.

 

Chantilly and Woodson girls will play next in the semi finals on June 1 at 5 p.m. at James Madison High School. Centreville and McLean will move to the semi finals on June 1 at 7 p.m. at James Madison High School.
