Lake Braddock v. Stone Bridge (Regional Semi-Final) – Win – 2-0Lake Braddock senior Kenny Towns allowed only four hits in the Bruins’ win over Stone Bridge last Wednesday. The Bruins scored both runs early on, and turned double plays in the later innings. Both Towns and head coach Jody Rutherford noted that strong defense helped lead the Bruins to victory. In the other semi-final game, South County defeated Madison 10-0, which paired the two teams at Friday night’s regional final.

Lake Braddock v. South County (Regional Final) – Loss – 5-9

South County’s victory over Lake Braddock on Friday night was their first regional championship win. Lake Braddock held the lead until the fourth inning, when South County’s Luke Bondurant hit a grand slam that put the Stallions up by two runs. They never lost that lead, eventually beating the Bruins 9-5. Lake Braddock will face Great Bridge in the first round of the state championships Tuesday night, 6/7, at 6:00pm.

Boys Soccer

Overall Record: 15-4-1

Lake Braddock v. Oakton (2nd Round Regional) – Win – 2-0

Senior Matt Fraedrich scored both of Lake Braddock’s goals last Tuesday to defeat the Oakton Cougars 2-0. The Bruins advanced to the regional semi-final against Washington-Lee on Thursday night.

Lake Braddock v. Washington-Lee (Regional Semi-Final) – Win – 3-2

After Washington-Lee junior Eric Schmidt scored the first goal of the game, the Bruins entered the second half of the game down 1-0. Senior Elhadji Diouf scored the tying goal for Lake Braddock. After the Generals scored another goal, senior Jefferson Ortiz sent a bicycle kick in the net to tie the game once again. The match went into overtime, and senior Matt Fraedrich scored the winning goal. The Bruins advanced to the regional final against Langley on Friday night.

Lake Braddock v. Langley (Regional Final) – Win – 2-1

Senior Matt Fraedrich once again scored the game-winning goal over the Langley Saxons on Friday night. Having not been ranked all season, the Bruins were able to defeat three number-one seeded teams and clinch the Northern Region soccer title. Lake Braddock will face Indian River in the state quarterfinals tomorrow night, 6/7, at 7:00pm.

Track and Field

Lake Braddock's Girl's Track Team finished second in the state this weekend!   Individual winners include: the Girls 4X800 Relay Team who were State Champions in 9:09.07, the 2nd fastest time in state meet history. The team is made up of sophomore Sophie Chase, senior Casey Lardner, and freshmen Katie Roche and Hannah Christen.

Sophie Chase was a State Champion in 3200 meters and 4th in the 1600; Casey Lardner 7th in 1600; Hannah Christen 5th in 3200; Sean Daugherty(11) 2nd in state in the pole vault; Nick Tuck (10) 7th in the 3200.


West Springfield High School

Boys Soccer

Overall Record: 15-2-3

West Springfield v. Langley (Regional Semi-Finals) – Loss – 1-2

The regional semi-final game began with a scoreless first half, but Langley senior Josh Ellis scored almost immediately upon the start of the second half. Senior Shahey Tenkerian scored the Spartans’ only goal partway through the second half, and the Saxons took the lead when senior Farhan Kahn scored their second and final goal. The Spartans had a successful season with only two losses and their first Patriot District title in several years.
