Beat the Heat: Where to Swim in Burke

Temperatures in the region could reach as high as 100 degrees. Consider cooling off at these Burke and Springfield-area pools.


The rain might be taking a break this week, but the heat is not. In fact, temperatures in Burke this week are expected to reach as high as 100 degrees.

The rise in temperature is due to a "heat dome" that's moving into the Washington, DC region, according to the Capital Weather Gang

Want to stay cool this week, but don't have a pool in your backyard? Here's a quick rundown of some of the local pools and their memberships.

Burke Centre Conservancy Pools

The Conservancy offers membership for five pools in the community. The pools operate from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday and close on Labor Day in September. Both residents and non-residents can purchase memberships.

Residents who are Conservancy members can purchase memberships at a discounted "Burke Centre Resident" rate of $65 for a single membership and $130 for a family membership through July 31.

Non-residents can purchase single memberships for $235 and $400 for family memberships through July 31.

Cottontail Swim and Racquet Club

The Cottontail Swim and Racquet Club, located at 7000 Cottontail Court in Springfield, serves communities in Burke and West Springfield.

According to their website, Cottontail's facility includes a six-lane, 25 meter pool that has a diving well with two meter boards. There is a shallow section for children, a wadding pool for toddlers and other features.

Cottontail offers two memberships, regular or "bonded", and associate or "annual" memberships. Bonded memberships are $385 and annual membershps are $425. There is a $25 application fee to process annual memberships.

Burke Racquet and Swim Club

Located at 6001 Burke Commons Road, the Burke Racquet and Swim Club offers a variety of memberships, including temporary memberships for the spring and summer season that range from $60 to $150. A fitness/swim membership is $57 for an individual, $77 for a couple and $47 for a daytime membership. Those prices do not include the one-time initiation fees of $200 for an individual membership, $350 for a couple and $90 for a daytime membership.

The swimming pool is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and closed 4-7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 3-7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
