It looks like Northern Virginia will dodge the extreme heat this week, with high temperatures starting out the week in the high 80s, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures will begin to heat up a bit more, into the 90s, starting Thursday.
The greatest chance for thunderstorms this week is on Tuesday, during the day, with a 50 percent chance, according to The Weather Channel. There is a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday and just about a 10 percent chance through Sunday.
The Capital Weather gang calls the weather system hovering over the area this week a "semi-tropical pattern," with humid highs in the upper 80s to low 90s.
The week can be summed up as "average" for July. The average temperature for the month, according to The Weather Channel, is 89 degrees. The average low for the month is 68 degrees. For August, the average high is 87 degrees and the average low is 67 degrees.
