As The Temperature Rises, Stay Cool
This week was the official start of the summer season, and the temperature is expected to rise to nearly 100 degrees over the next couple of days. Here are some tips to beat the heat:

  • Drink two to four glasses of cool fluids each hour.
  • Plan outdoor activities around the heat. If you must go outside, go before noon or at night.
  • Eat light meals, avoiding high-protein foods.
  • Wear light-colored clothing, which helps reflect sunlight.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in a car - not even for a few minutes.
  • Residents who need help to keep their home cool may be able to get assistance from two programs locally administered by the county:
    The Cooling Assistance Program
    The Fan Care Program
  • Residents who need immediate help with utility bills or other urgent human services assistance can call the county's Coordinated Services Planning staff at 703-222-0880, TTY 711. County staff can connect residents with a network of services provided by public, private and community-based organizations, as well as appropriate county government resources.
  • Additional heat safety tips are available online and updates will be posted on NewsWire and the emergency blog throughout the summer.
