Burke History Day, Walk to School Day, Children's Concert at Lake Braddock Secondary

Five things to look forward to in Burke this week.

The month of October is moving right along. Here's a peek at a few some upcoming events and meetings in Burke you might want to look out for.

  1. Get ready to learn more about Burke: Burke History Day is Saturday. The event, which is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. will be held in conjunction with the Burke Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department (BVFD)’s Annual Open House at 9501 Old Burke Lake Rd. More details here.
  2. Burke residents will have an opportunity to voice their opinions about the proposed pilot programs at Fairfax County Public Libraries at two meetings in Burke this week. There's a meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Lake Braddock Secondary School, located at 9200 Burke Lake Rd., in Lecture Hall B135. The second meeting is Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Kings Park Library, located at 9000 Burke Lake Rd. More details here.
  3. This Wednesday is International Walk to School Day, which aims to promote physical activity while reducing traffic congestion and pollution near schools. Several Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) are participating in the annual day. See the full list here. Students in the Burke and Springfield areas are encouraged to participate by biking to school or walk to their bus stops. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children to school and to work with their schools and PTAs or PTOs to gather in groups for the event.
  4. There's a Lake Braddock Secondary School Annual Children's Concert on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Little Theater at Lake Braddock Secondary School, located at 9200 Burke Lake Rd. Admission to the concert is $2 per person or two cans of food as a donation. All proceeds benefit ECHO, a local organization that serves families in need in the Springfield and Burke Communities. More details here.
  5. The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce will host the "Taste of Greater Springfield" on Sunday from 4-8 p.m. at the Waterford at Springfield, 6715 Commerce St. More details here.
