Weekend: S'Mores, Meteors, Birds' Nests, Sundaes + Snakes!

Plus flower-arranging, coffee-sipping and a bird-watch hike.

Looking for something fun to do this holiday weekend? Fairfax County has you covered. Here are some of the events at Fairfax County parks going on this weekend:


Friday

Campfire Friday-Animal Tracking Location:  Hidden Pond Nature Center
Start Time/Day:  7pm Fri
Join us for an evening campfire for the whole family. Learn to recognize and follow the tracks of wildlife through the forest. The program concludes with a campfire and smores. Child must be accompanied by a registered adult. 5/23/2014

Campfire and Meteor program 
Location:  Cub Run RECenter
Start Time/Day:  7:30pm Fri
They say there is nothing new under the sun but scientist are predicting something new under the moon, a significant meteor shower in May. Comet 209p/LINEAR discovered in 2004, has left a sizable trail of debris in the earths orbit and that debris may create up to 100 meteors and hour for us to view. Learn more about comets and meteors and their place in the solar system at this program that will get you ready to be a meteor watcher. Campfire included. 5/23/2014

Saturday

Kid’s Korner  
Preschool children (ages three to six) with their adult learn about nesting birds at E.C. Lawrence Park. The program on 5/15 runs 1 to 2 p.m. The 5/24 program runs 10 to 11 a.m. Register online. For information, call 703-631-0013.

Riverbend Bird Stroll: Warblers 
From 7 to 9 a.m., hike with a naturalist during peak warbler migration at Riverbend Park. Meet at the visitor center. The cost is $7. Register online. For information, call 703-759-9018.

Tasting Party: Coffee Cupping 
Can you tell Guatemalan coffee from Indonesian? Come to Historic Green Spring from 10:30 a.m. to noon to discover why coffees from different countries are quite distinct and taste the differences for yourself. Sample coffees from major growing regions of the world to assess how terroir, or taste of place, affects your cup of Joe! The cost is $30 per person.  Register online. Tour: Cures from the Quarter 
Learn how enslaved African Americans maintained their health at Sully. Tours are offered at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. The cost is $7 per /adult, $6 per student, and $5 per senior and child. For information, call 703-437-1794.

Nocturnal Senses Campfire  
Learn how animals of the night use their keen sense of smell, sight and hearing to get a meal, or to keep from being a meal at Hidden Oaks Nature Center from 7 to 8 p.m. Make s’mores. The cost is $6 per person. Register online. For information, call 703-941-1065.

Floral Design: Grocery Bunch Makeovers  
Get tips and tricks to turn that grocery floral bunch into a beautiful arrangement at Green Spring Gardens from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $38 per person plus a $25 supply fee. Register online. For information, call 703-642-5173.


Sunday

Copperheads and Black Racers 

Assist a naturalist at E.C. Lawrence Park with a reptile survey from 10 to 11 a.m. The cost is $5. Register online. For information, call 703-631-0013.

Sundaes in the Park  
From 2 to 3 p.m., bring the family for a Sunday stroll along the paths around Hidden Oaks Nature Center and stop by the campfire area for an ice cream sundae. Sundaes are $2; the walk and visit to Nature Playce are free. Register online. For information, call 703-941-1065.
