Weekend: Wagon Rides, Fishing, Campfires, Making Ice Cream + Drawing Dragonflies

Looking for something fun to do this weekend? The weather is supposed to be spectacular, so get out and have some fun. The following information is provided by Fairfax County.

Saturday

Fishing with Owen  
Children ages 8 to 12 learn about our local fish and cast a line to hook a big one at Hidden Pond Nature Center from 6 to 7 p.m. All fish caught will be released. Equipment and supplies are provided. The cost is $6 per child. Register online. For information, call 703-451-9588.

Arts in the Parks Extra! 
After the scheduled Arts in the Park performance at E.C. Lawrence Park, interpreters will do their own “song and dance.” Meet park animals, explore the gardens, get your hands on some history, and more - all for free. Workshop: DIY Painted Garden Flags 
Add movement and whimsy to your garden by designing and crafting a cheerful, no-sew string of mini flags. Horticulturalist Nancy Olney leads you through this summer-fun project at Green Spring Gardens from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Dyed fabric, fabric paint, adhesive and templates are provided in the $45 fee. Workshop: Ikebana Flower Arranging 
Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. From 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Green Spring Gardens, learn the rich symbolism and fundamentals of Ikebana and take home your own arrangement. Historic Huntley Summer Social 
Come celebrate summer and enjoy refreshing lemonade, or try your hand at making hand-cranked ice cream at the villa with a view, Historic Huntley, from 1 to 4 p.m. Compete in period games or build a kite to fly on the cool breeze. Fliers of the Night Campfire  
Join a naturalist at the campfire to learn how animals that fly at night (owls, bats and moths) do so without banging into trees. Mountain Wildlife Camping Trip 
Meet a naturalist at Big Meadows campground in the Shenandoah National Park for three hikes from 2 to 7 p.m. Visit the unique habitat called the Appalachian Cove forest. Learn some of the species that call this area home. Black bears, snow shoe hares, white tailed deer and seal salamanders are just a few. The program cost is $20 per person or $45 for a family. Evening Stroll  
Take this rare opportunity to visit the wetland after dark. Learn the curious habits of fireflies, listen for owls, and watch bats hunt at Huntley Meadows Park from 8 to 9:30 p.m. You might even see resident beavers at work. The cost is $6 person. Campfire Saturdays: Sounds of Summer  
Listen to the sounds of frogs, insects and more as you enjoy the lakeside natural area of Royal Lake Park, the hidden gem of Fairfax, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. This naturalist-led adventure concludes by a cheerful campfire on the shore, while meeting some of the wild creatures up close. Wagon Ride: Visit to the Corn Crib

How to Draw Your Dragon(fly)
