Armed Services Day

The United States recognizes Armed Services Day on the third Saturday in May.

Keeping America Strong and Secure: United in Purpose—Steadfast in Service is the theme for Armed Services Day 2012 on Saturday. "On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days," according to the U.S. Department of Defense. "The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense." There are five branches of the U.S. military.  They are: Air Force Founded on Sept. 18, 1947 Official Motto: “Fly-Fight-Win" Official Song: "The Air Force Song" (First line is, "Off we go into the wild blue yonder ... George Allen, Business Leaders Discuss Energy, Regulations, Financing

U.S. Senate candidate met with about a dozen business leaders Friday morning in Springfield.

Energy, Obamacare, government regulations and spending were the hot topics at a morning roundtable discussion Friday between a dozen local business leaders and Republican U.S. Senate candidate George Allen in Springfield. The former governor and U.S. senator, in his stop at the West Springfield Government Center, said he's optimistic about the future and wants to change the trajectory of the U.S. economy.  "My thoughts on energy are that it should be affordable, reliable and preferably American," said Allen, who backs the construction of the 1,700-mile Keystone XL Pipeline from Canada to Texas, which was rejected earlier this year by President Obama. "We truly have the ability to be strategically energy independent. We don't have to worry …

Robinson Remembers Coach Barry Gorodnick

The Robinson Secondary School coach and alumni was remembered Thursday.

To those who did not know Barry Gorodnick, Robinson Secondary School would seem like an odd place for a memorial service. But Gorodnick, or “Coach G.” as students knew him, lived for the school where he had attended since the seventh grade. He was 47 years old when he died on Saturday, and it seemed like he had never left the place. “He loved it so much he graduated and came back here for another 24 years,” said Robinson principal Dan Meier, who gave an opening statement at the memorial service held in the school’s gymnasium on Thursday afternoon. “Barry was Robinson.” The memorial service brought out hundreds of people — Gorodnick’s family, his extended family, the Robinson community. The service welcomed comments from the school …

Did You Know?

Did You Know? Sharon Bulova Is a Doodler!

You may think twice about telling your kid to stop doodling.

If you've ever wondered what Sharon Bulova, chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, is scribbling under the microphone during those incredibly long public hearings, it turns out that she's a lifelong doodler. In addition to her duties as a public official for 25 years, Bulova has run more than a few pens dry by making cartoon likenesses of her colleagues. The drawings tell a sort of truth — from a certain point of view. Once you see them, you'll never mistake the mustache of U.S. Rep Gerry Connolly (D-11th) for another, or the familiar dome of Mount Vernon Supervisor Gerry Hyland.   "Since becoming chairman, I don't draw and doodle as much as I used to," Bulova told Patch from her office in the Fairfax County Government Center. "…

'Battleship:' A Waterlogged Absurdity You Can Cheer For

PG-13 'Battleship' feels like a two-hour Navy recruitment video.

I'm surprised blue and gold aren't the colors used on the movie poster for "Battleship," along with Go Navy! and Beat Aliens! If you leave your brain at the front door of the multiplex on a day you feel like rooting for the home team, you could do worse than vacillating between cheering and snickering for those two hours of this completely ridiculous, raucous mash-up of "Independence Day," "Pearl Harbor," and "Transformers."  Director Peter Berg, of "Friday Night Lights," "The Kingdom," and "Hancock," knows his way around the camera. So we can try to accept the fact that for some reason he feels the need to release his inner Michael Bay. What results is not exactly a good movie, but one that unapologetically embraces its cliches, even on …

Kaine Talks Rail, Economy and Bipartisanship

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.

U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

Bob Bruhns - Thanks Bob, blind in one eye and does see so good out of the other. The phase 1 and 2 construction cost is whopping. With that fact alone would make anyone think more than twice at the continuance. Afraid that amount is out of my range. I think most of us really look at the real cost - the interest cost and probably at whatever original figure would go up over time to get the …   more ›

Police Release Photos of Suspect's Car in Springfield Kidnapping

Car followed victim's car as he was forced to drive to banks.

Fairfax County Police Department detectives have a new clue in the abduction of a Springfield man from his home earlier this month: a photo of a car that could have been used to help the suspected kidnappers.  In the early morning hours of May 9, last Wednesday, three men reportedly kidnapped a man from in front of his Cumberland Avenue home at gunpoint. The suspected kidnappers forced him to drive them in his car to two banks, where he withdrew money from ATMs. After taking the money, the reported kidnappers cut their victim before leaving him crammed in his car's trunk. The suspects abandoned the car in Annandale and fled. The photos, captured on Commerce Street, are of a car following the reported victim's car. While the suspects had …
