Chan Sung Jung Stops Dustin Poirier at the Patriot Center

The Ultimate Fighting Championship was at the Patriot Center Tuesday night.

The latest Ultimate Fighting Championship at the Patriot Center matched 24 fighters and attracted just under 4,600 fans. The main event between Korean Zombie and Dustin Poirier brought fighters from around the world to compete, but fans cheered loudest for local heroes. Ultimate Fighter winner, Amir Sadollah, from Richmond, pulled off a razor-thin win over Jorge Lopez. Lopez wrestled Sadollah against the cage for much of the fight, but Sadollah stifled Lopez’s offense and took over the match in the third round to secure a split-decision victory. Falls Church’s Kamal Shalarus did not fare as well. Stunned early in the first round by a high kick, a dazed Shalarus failed to defend a rear-naked choke from Brazilian fighter Rafeal dos Anjos, …

Celebration culminates with pit stops for "Bike to Work Day" on Friday.

Local and national bike organizations are encouraging cyclists to ditch their cars this week for "Bike to Work Week," a national celebration aiming to encourage citizens across the country to bike to work, or for pleasure, on a regular basis. The week culminates in Bike to Work Day on Friday, held rain or shine, when cyclists can make a "pit stop" at one of 58 locations across the D.C. region for T-shirts, refreshments, giveaways and bicycling advice. 12:11 pm on Tuesday, May 15, 2012

I've attempted to bike to work on many occasions over the years from my home in Burke to my office in Fair Lakes. The number one deterrent to doing so is that the bike lane infrastructure in Fairfax is woefully under maintained, and adequate crossings at major intersections are severely lacking. The County Parkway trail has practically crumbled to dirt along the majority of the road south of I-66…   more ›

Northern Virginia Native Returns to Face the Nationals

Fairfax native Michael Schwimer is now a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, in town playing against the Nats this weekend.

It is just about eight miles from St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes in Alexandria to Nationals Park in southeast Washington. But it took Major League pitcher Michael Schwimer about seven years to make the trip as a player. "It was crazy—it was a dream come true," Schwimer said, describing his Major League debut last year at Nationals Park.  And now he is back for more as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, who began a three-game series Friday night at Nationals Park. The teams also play Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening. Standing in front of his locker before Friday's game in Washington, the Fairfax native said he planned to leave about 12 tickets for family and friends for the Friday game and about 15 for the Saturday game. He grew up near…
