Moran Responds to Son Getting Caught on Video, Criminal Investigation

Congressman says his office will cooperate with investigation.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran responded Thursday night to his son's sudden departure from his campaign, saying Patrick Moran is learning a "tough lesson" after being caught on video by a conservative activist. Patrick Moran has been at the center of a political storm since a video surfaced Wednesday from conservative activist James O'Keefe in which an unseen cameraman repeatedly asks for advice on how to vote for 100 inactive voters, whose names and addresses he had claimed to have obtained. After telling the man his energy would be better utilized in more traditional, legitimate get-out-the-vote efforts, the younger Moran informs the cameraman that he would need to forge documents to get past new voter identification laws. Though O'Keefe…

UPDATE: Independent Candidates Qualify for Ballot in Congressional Races

Northern Virginia voters will choose among Democrats, Republicans and Independent candidates in congressional races come November.

UPDATE (3:45 p.m.) The State Board of Elections confirmed today that Chris DeCarlo and Mark Gibson, running in the 11th District, were verified with 1,000 signatures each earlier today.  “I can’t thank everyone enough: Friends, friends of friends, neighbors, colleagues, and complete strangers,” Gibson said in a news release. “These are all voters who want to get involved in our political process, giving voters a greater number and more diverse selection of candidates for Congress.  Getting on the ballot is a strong victory for democracy.” --- Independent candidates running for Congress had until June 12 to turn in 1,000 signatures to get on the ballot in November. Some candidates are still waiting to hear if they are on the ballot and …

Moran Seeks 12th Term, Faces Newcomer in Primary

Northern Virginia congressman says his seniority benefits constituents.

Since 1990, when Rep. Jim Moran was first elected to Congress, ‘80s music has lost its popularity, come back in style and is on its way out again. A lot can happen in 22 years, the time Moran has spent serving in Congress. It’s the seniority gained over that time, said Moran, a Democrat representing Virginia’s 8th District, that allows him to influence legislation beneficial to the people of Northern Virginia and is the reason why he deserves a 12th term in the U.S. House of Representatives. While Moran’s critics say a fresh face is needed in Congress, he maintains that his seniority works for the benefit of his constituency. “For lack of a better method, people’s ability to influence the priorities and the direction of the Congress is …

Shuttleworth was originally sponsored by a Texas Republican PAC, which subsequently dropped him. A USNA-grad Navy pilot has up to a fourteen-year service obligation (this is actually explicit in statutes and Navy regulations), but Shuttleworth was released after the “basic 8.” Shuttleworth has literally no local political, policy or government record at all, and hasn’t even been actively employed…   more ›

Voter Guide to June 12 Primaries

Republican primary election set for U.S. Senate candidates and 11th Congressional District; Democratic primary election scheduled for 8th Congressional District Democratic candidates.

In less than a month, Virginia voters will head to the polls for the Democratic and Republican primaries on Tuesday, June 12. Across Northern Virginia, voters will decide among candidates for the U.S. Senate as well as for the 8th and 11th Congressional districts. If your polling place is holding both a Republican primary and a Democratic primary, you can only vote in one primary.  If you aren't registered to vote, you have until Monday, May 21 at 5 p.m. to register. Little known fact: If you are 17 years old now but you are turning 18 by the Nov. 6 general election, you can vote in the June 12 primary. If you plan to do this, call your voter's registration office ahead of time and be sure to bring official proof of your age. Polls will be…

Moran Challenger Allowed on Ballot, in Reversal

Bruce Shuttleworth had claimed he was unlawfully left off the Democratic primary ballot.

The Virginia State Board of Elections announced Monday evening it would allow a Democratic primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Jim Moran on the ballot after initially disqualifying him. Bruce Shuttleworth, an Arlington resident, filed a lawsuit last week in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. In the lawsuit, he claims Democratic Party officials failed to certify valid signatures his campaign collected from voters residing in the 8th Congressional District, leaving Moran the only candidate to be certified for the ballot. The Washington Post reported Monday evening that Justin Riemer, deputy secretary of the State Board of Elections, said the state Democratic party had certified Shuttleworth’s name. Riemer did not say …

Independent Candidate Howell Hopes to Unseat Moran

Political newcomer making bid in Virginia's 8th Congressional District.

Jason Howell has no previous government experience, but that hasn’t stopped him from aiming high in his political aspirations. Howell, who is running as an independent for Virginia’s 8th Congressional District, the seat currently held by Democrat Jim Moran, said Congress is where the problem lies. “When there’s a fire in the kitchen, you don’t go to the bedroom to put it out,” Howell said. “That’s where the biggest challenge is. There are zero independents right now in the House of Representatives, and that’s part and parcel [to] that sort of gridlock that we have. ... In the mix, the issues that are really important, the ones that matter, kind of get lost, and the people that you’re supposed to be representing aren’t represented as much …

Even if he is a salesman (which i find funny that is somehow used by you as a slander)....it is FAR better than a 'politician' who is a utter incompetent, total crook, who enriches his family and friends -- while sitting back and being a anti-semite. Thanks for helping widen route 1 for BRAC --- 10 YEARS LATER!!! What a fool.   more ›
