Burke Author Ken Budd at Fall for the Book

The writer will speak about wanting to live a life that matters Wednesday at the Fall for the Book Festival.

Note: Ken Budd will be on C-SPAN 2's book program on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012. More info here. ------  Ken Budd faced a crisis of meaning when his father suddenly died of a heart attack.  "It's not even dying that bothers me," Budd wrote in his memoir. "It's dying without making a difference in the world.  Without doing a damn thing that matters." Budd faced his crisis in a series of volunteer trips around the world, and wrote about them in "The Voluntourist: A Six Country Tale of Love, Loss, Fatherhood, Fate, and Singing Bon Jovi in Bethlehem." On Wednesday, Budd will relive his adventures when he speaks as part of the Fall for the Book Festival. His presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. at Shirlington Library, 4200 Campbell Avenue in Arlington…

Holiday Volunteer Opportunities

Opportunities to help nonprofit groups give back to the community for the holidays.

Your holiday shopping can benefit the Burke Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.  Each time you use Good Search and Good Shop to search and shop online, the visited website makes a donation to Burke Volunteer Fire and Rescue. The West Springfield Police Citizens’ Advisory Committee each year provides holiday meals at the station for officers who must be away from their families on Christmas Day. To support Holiday Meals for Officers, mail a check (payable to Howard Lincoln, CAC Treasurer) to Citizens' Advisory Committee, West Springfield District Station, 6140 Rolling Road, Springfield, VA 22152.  The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has several collection locations throughout Burke and Springfield.  You can donate new unwrapped toys …
