Fairfax Product Shawn Camp Pitches 500th Big League Game

Shawn Camp, a Fairfax product, is a reliever for the Chicago Cubs who led the Major Leagues in appearances as this week began and recently pitched in his 500th big league game.

The Washington Nationals, who have already clinched their first-ever winning season, have been reaching milestones on a regular basis. And so has Shawn Camp, a former baseball standout at Robinson High and George Mason University. Camp made the 500th appearance of his Major League career on Friday, Aug. 30 against the Giants, and he was given the scorecard from the game as a souvenir. “I have to get it framed. It was a great day and we won,” said Camp, a 16th round pick of the San Diego Padres in 1997 out of George Mason. Camp, 36, is in the area this week as a right-handed reliever for the Chicago Cubs, who are playing a four-game series with the first-place Nationals (83-52) through Thursday night. “All of my good buddies are Nats’ fans…

West Springfield's Joe Saunders Debuts with the Orioles

Saunders is slated to take the mound Wednesday, three days after being traded to Baltimore by Arizona.

West Springfield High School graduate Joe Saunders will debut with the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday night, as they continue their four-game series against the Chicago White Sox. Saunders was traded on Sunday by the Diamondbacks, in return for reliever Matt Lindstrom. The Orioles are making a run for the playoffs, something they have not reached since 1997, and the team wanted a veteran pitcher who can help them get there. “We’ve liked Joe Saunders for quite awhile,” said Baltimore general manager Dan Duquette. “He’s pitched in the American League. He’s pitched in the playoffs. He’s pitched in a tough ballpark in Arizona. And we just like his experience," he said. "I also like the fact that he’s left-handed," added Duquette. "I think that …

Former GMU Standout Aims for the Big Leagues

Westfield High grad Justin Bour was a Southern League All-Star this season in the Chicago Cubs' farm system with Tennessee, and is among the leaders in RBIs in all of minor league baseball.

When Justin Bour played at Westfield High, Billy Swoope, a long-time baseball scout for the Chicago Cubs, noticed. Swoope follows top amateur players in the mid-Atlantic region, and he decided then to keep track of Bour. Later Bour played at Division I George Mason University in Fairfax, and Swoope continued to follow the slugger. "The thing I liked about him was he was very agile for a big guy," said Swoope. "He was a very good contact hitter for a power guy." “Justin is one of the few kids … who could really hit the ball to the opposite field as well as anyone we have had here,” said Billy Brown, the veteran head coach at Mason. “His approach was fantastic. The one thing that Justin shows is a really marketable commodity: power. The ball…

Nick Balenger, a pitcher with the 2012 state champion Lake Braddock baseball team, was paralyzed from the shoulders down in a swimming accident while in Maui, reported NBC4 Washington. On Tuesday, two bus-loads of supporters greeted Balenger as he was transferred to MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital in northwest Washington, D.C. According to NBC4, Balenger landed badly while attempting a flip in the ocean on a family vacation to his birthplace.  According to information on Caring Bridge, Nick has had two surgeries to stabilize his neck. Bruins Baseball Wins Patriot District Title

Lake Braddock faces Wakefield Friday in the Northern Region tournament opener.

The Lake Braddock Bruins (20-2) won the 2012 Patriot District baseball title Tuesday evening, defeating West Springfield 7-2 at South County Secondary. It was the Bruins’ second Patriot District final appearance in as many years. South County defeated Lake Braddock in last year’s game, but the Bruins exacted their revenge on West Springfield. With Tuesday’s win, Coach Jody Rutherford captures his fourth Patriot District crown. He joined Lake Braddock's coaching staff as an assistant in 1998, and was named head coach in 2001.  By any standard, his time at the school can be considered a success. His secret? “I like the kids to be disciplined and hard working," said Rutherford. "I try to give them opportunities to become better baseball …

Northern Virginia Native Returns to Face the Nationals

Fairfax native Michael Schwimer is now a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, in town playing against the Nats this weekend.

It is just about eight miles from St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes in Alexandria to Nationals Park in southeast Washington. But it took Major League pitcher Michael Schwimer about seven years to make the trip as a player. "It was crazy—it was a dream come true," Schwimer said, describing his Major League debut last year at Nationals Park.  And now he is back for more as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, who began a three-game series Friday night at Nationals Park. The teams also play Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening. Standing in front of his locker before Friday's game in Washington, the Fairfax native said he planned to leave about 12 tickets for family and friends for the Friday game and about 15 for the Saturday game. He grew up near…

Little League Comes with a Big Price Tag

Poll: What do you think? Is the cost of kids' sports out of hand?

Have you purchased a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100? How about a $250 bat? Baseball and softball equipment, including cleats and uniforms, accounted for over $1 billion in sales in 2010, reported the New York Times. "Youth equipment represents the highest percentage of sales, particularly bat sales, as the parent willing to buy a $200, 28-inch bat for a 9-year-old is likely to pay the same price for a 30-inch bat for a 10-year-old the next season," wrote Mike Tanier in "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues." The cost of joining a league and outfitting a player can overwhelm families, and may even prevent some kids from playing. So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves …
