Burke, Springfield Residents Complete Boston Marathon

Seven residents completed the 26.2 mile course in the hottest race of the past 13 years.

Burke, Springfield Residents Run Boston Marathon

Nine area residents are set to run the 116th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 16, 2012.

Three Burke and six Springfield residents have qualified and registered to compete in the 116th running of the Boston Marathon on Monday. The Burke residents are: The Springfield residents are: With temperatures expected to be in the high 80s during the race, the Boston Marathon has issued a warm weather advisory for the runners.   "If the temperatures reach certain levels, running will put even the most fit athletes at risk for heat injury," said the advisory. Qualifying times are more stringent for the Boston Marathon this year, with the youngest eligible runners (those ages 18 to 24) needing to complete a qualifying marathon in 3 hours, 5 minutes for men and 3 hours, 35 minutes for women. Springfield Teacher Prepares for His 74th Marathon

Steve Coffman is preparing to run his 35th annual Boston Marathon in April.

Steve Coffman was in the right place at the right time. The place was Hawaii, where Coffman was stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps. The year was 1972, and American Frank Shorter had just won the Olympic gold medal in marathon running in Munich. The long-distance running craze spread throughout the nation, and Coffman found training in Hawaii especially appealing. “I owe a lot of it to the perfect place to run,” said Coffman. “I could get out and just enjoy the beautiful outdoors of Hawaii – the ocean, the mountains. It was just enjoyable.” Coffman, now a physical education teacher for special-needs children at Saratoga Elementary School in Springfield and Hollin Meadows Science and Math Focus Elementary School, dove right in to the sport…
