Lake Braddock Pitcher Paralyzed

Nick Balenger, 17, injured in a swimming accident.

Nick Balenger, a pitcher with the 2012 state champion Lake Braddock baseball team, was paralyzed from the shoulders down in a swimming accident while in Maui, reported NBC4 Washington. On Tuesday, two bus-loads of supporters greeted Balenger as he was transferred to MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital in northwest Washington, D.C. According to NBC4, Balenger landed badly while attempting a flip in the ocean on a family vacation to his birthplace.  According to information on Caring Bridge, Nick has had two surgeries to stabilize his neck. The last surgery fused his C-4 and C-5 vertebrae. He has movement in his arms and sensation in his lower extremities. Bruins Baseball Wins Patriot District Title

Lake Braddock faces Wakefield Friday in the Northern Region tournament opener.

The Lake Braddock Bruins (20-2) won the 2012 Patriot District baseball title Tuesday evening, defeating West Springfield 7-2 at South County Secondary. It was the Bruins’ second Patriot District final appearance in as many years. South County defeated Lake Braddock in last year’s game, but the Bruins exacted their revenge on West Springfield. With Tuesday’s win, Coach Jody Rutherford captures his fourth Patriot District crown. He joined Lake Braddock's coaching staff as an assistant in 1998, and was named head coach in 2001.  By any standard, his time at the school can be considered a success. The Lake Braddock Bruins may not have walked out of the Cougar Holiday Classic with as many wins as they would have hoped, but they will enter Patriot District play a better team. "We showed a lot of growth, and we're not making the same mistakes we were making five, six games ago," said Leigh Janis, Bruins head coach. "As a team, we're just gelling a lot better." The Bruins lost two of three games in the tournament, first to Stone Ridge 37-32 on Wednesday, then to McLean High 51-46 on Thursday. But the Bruins started the tournament with a 54-50 double-overtime win over Loudoun County on Tuesday. In that game, they entered halftime down 32-21, but fought back in the second half to hold the Raiders to six points, tying the game at the end …
