Burke Native to Share History of Family's Logging Business

Burke Historical Society meets on Sunday, May 20 at 4 p.m.

Delbert (Bill) Sheads has seen many changes in Burke. His father and uncle founded a timbering business and operated a mobile saw mill at various sites within Fairfax, Fauquier, and Culpeper Counties. Born in Burke in 1923, Sheads worked in Fairfax for the family business, scouting for, selecting, cutting and hauling the timber from which much of the construction in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., would be made. Sheads will be speaking about the history of logging in the Burke area at Sunday's Burke Historical Society general meeting, which begins at 4 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the Lutheran Church of the Abiding Presence.  Joining Sheads will be Jon Vrana, president of the Burke Historical Society, and chair of the group's …

Program Seeks Photos of Local Vets Who Died in Vietnam

National Call for Photos hopes to put faces with names engraved on walls of Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The 58,193 Americans who died for their country in the Vietnam War are memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund wants to put a picture with each of the names engraved on the iconic walls of the memorial. They've issued a National Call for Photos.  The National Call for Photos is still looking for photographs of the following men (see table below) from Fairfax County, several of whom are from Lorton, Springfield and Fort Belvoir. Collected pictures will be used in the Education Center at The Wall and can also be found on The Virtual Wall. David Dolberg Celebrates 30 Years of Business in Burke, Springfield

Dr. David Dolberg opened his chiropractic practice on April 19, 1982.

Dr. David Dolberg, D.C., of Family Chiropractic of Springfield celebrates his 30th year in business this week. His current office is located at 8440 Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield, but he actually started out on April 19, 1982, on Burke Lake Road in Burke. "We have a very unique wellness facility," said Dr. Dolberg. "In the same building we have our chiropractic practice, two certified massage therapists, and Registered Nurse Carol Epner, RN, BSN, who guides many locals in health and nutrition programs," he said. "In addition, my wife, Joan Normandy-Dolberg, MS, LPC, is the clinic director of Family Counseling of Springfield, also in this building." Helene T. Lesansky, Burke Resident, NOVA Professor, Dies

Lesansky was a founding member of Northern Virginia Community College.

"Helene T. Lesansky, 89, a retired economics and sociology professor at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) died of complications related to Parkinson’s disease Jan. 9 at her home in Burke," reported The Washington Post. Lesansky was a founding member of NOVA, teaching there from 1965 until her retirement in 1986. Her survivors include three sons, Henry R. Lesansky of Mount Airy and Lewis Lesansky and Mendel Lesansky, both of Burke.

Burke Historical Society Triples Membership, Awaits 501(c)3 Status

Annual meeting report shows a vibrant, growing organization.

Col. Silas Burke (aka Jon Vrana), for whom Burke is named, presented the "Annual State of the Society" Sunday night at Burke Historical Society's (BHS) monthly meeting. The event received so many RSVPs, it had to be enlarged to two sessions, one at 4 p.m. and one at 6 p.m. Members and guests gathered in the historic Silas Burke House, now owned by Terry and Suzi Neal. "The year 2011 was one of growth for Burke Historical Society and for our membership," said Vrana, president of BHS.  In the last year, BHS membership more than tripled, increasing from 35 members to 116 at the start of Sunday night's meetings.  "More have joined tonight," he said.
