Fairfax Station Historical Marker Unveiled

Fairfax County Historical Marker commemorates the village of Fairfax Station.

The Friends of the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum held a dedication ceremony Wednesday for the unveiling of the Fairfax Station Commemorative Marker. The new sign is part of the Fairfax County History Commission Historical Roadside Marker project. Virginia Delegate Tim Hugo and Springfield District Supervisor Pat Herrity were among the guests who gathered as four longtime Fairfax Station residents unveiled the plaque. Joan Rogers, president of Fairfax Station Railroad Museum Friends, introduced the guests, who shared memories of their growing up in what was then a small town with an active train station. Photos: Fairfax Station Commemorates Civil War Service

The 150th Anniversary Civil War reenactment commemoration at Fairfax Station Railroad Museum.

The Fairfax Station Railroad Museum held a reenactment commemoration Aug. 25 and 26 to honor Clara Barton, the Military Medical Evacuation Corps and over 3,000 soldiers brought to the station in the last days of August 1862. The station became the first logistically combined triage and transportation site of the Civil War, follwoing the nearby battles of Second Manassas (Second Battle of Bull Run) and Ox Hill (The Battle of Chantilly). Clara Barton, then unknown, was among the civilians who triaged the wounded as they waited for trains to take them to hospitals in Alexandria and Washington, D.C.  Barton would later be dubbed the "Angel of the Battlefield." Fairfax Station Civil War Re-enactment This Weekend

Re-enactors will present living history demonstrations at the Fairfax Railroad Museum August 25 - 26.

Union and Confederate re-enactors will convene this weekend at the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum to commemorate the 1862 medical evacuation of Union wounded to the station after the nearby battles of Second Manassas (Second Battle of Bull Run) and Ox Hill (The Battle of Chantilly). Some 3,000 wounded Union soldiers were brought to the station in the last days of August 1862, and hastily treated as they awaited trains to take them to hospitals in Alexandria and Washington. Civilians came on the trains to assist, and among them was Clara Barton, later dubbed 'Angel of the Battlefield' and founder of the American Red Cross. The Aug.25 and 26 event will be held rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Outdoor exhibits will feature …
