Updated: Former Swim Club Coach Pleads Guilty to Child Sex Abuse

Rick Curl, who co-founded the Curl-Burke Swim Club, faces up to 15 years in prison.

Former swim coach Rick Curl pleaded guilty to one count of child sex abuse Thursday in Montgomery County Circuit Court, NBC 4 reports. Charges were brought against Curl in November after a former swim student's allegations of abuse were reported by the Washington Post. The student claimed Curl abused her for five years in the 1980s. Curl agreed to plead guilty at a hearing earlier this month. According to NBC, Curl coached Olympian Tom Dolan. Curl faces up to 15 years in prison. As a result of his guilty plea, Curl will be required to register as a sex offender. NBC 4 states Curl's sentencing is scheduled for May. He has been released on a $50,000 bond. Former Swim Club Coach Rick Curl Agrees to Plead Guilty to Child Sex Abuse

Curl was charged last year after a former swim club student reported having an inappropriate sexual relationship with Curl. The club's name was changed following the charges.

Ex-swim coach and founder of the Curl-Burke Swim Club Rick Curl is to plead guilty to child sexual abuse he announced Tuesday and will do so at a hearing Feb. 21 in Montgomery County Circuit Court, according to the Washington Post. Curl was charged last year in October after a former swim student, Kelley Currin, said Curl abused her in the 1980s when she was 13 years old. Currin told authorities the abuse lasted until she was 18. Nation’s Capital Swim Clubs are located in Burke, Falls Church, Tysons Corner, Manassas, Manassas Park and Warrenton. Curl-Burke Swim Club Founder Banned by USA Swimming

The swim clubs are changing their name following USA Swimming's decision, which are related to a reported inappropriate sexual relationship between Curl and a teenage girl in the 1980s.

Following allegations of an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl in the 1980s, Rick Curl, a prominent swimming coach and founder of the Curl-Burke Swim Club, has been banned for life by USA Swimming. In addition, the swim club has a new name and new ownership—the Nation’s Capital Swim Club is now under the ownership of Thomas Ugast, according to a press release. There are Nation’s Capital Swim Clubs in Burke, Falls Church, Tysons Corner, Manassas, Manassas Park and Warrenton. There are also practice facilities in the Greater Alexandria area. Your article is incorrect. The team formerly known as Curl Burke was released from their contract with the Warrenton Aquatic Facility (WARF) in early August. There was an article in the Fauquier newspaper on August 9th indicating that the City of Warrenton did not wish to further their association with the team citing the recent events surrounding it.   more ›
