Braddock Dogs, a group hoping to make an off-leash dog park a reality in Burke, is scheduled to meet next Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Braddock District Offices to elect a board of directors, formally approve by-laws, and submit a letter of intent to sponsor a dog park as part of the Fairfax County Park Authority's (FCPA) master plan for Monticello Park. "There needs to be an organization in place to take responsibility for the dog park before the county will build it," said Braddock Dogs organizer Russ Rosen. A public hearing is scheduled for Monday on the first off-leash dog park in the Braddock District area of Fairfax County.
Burke-area dog lovers have been working for more than two years to bring an off-leash dog park to the Braddock District, and a public hearing next week could bring the idea closer to reality. “An off-leash dog area allows dogs to socialize and run without being intrusive and be a problem,” said Russ Rosen, who is a member of Braddock Dogs, a group formed to promote creating an off-leash, fenced-in dog park. “It gives them an opportunity to get some exercise and be around other dogs and let people who like dogs to meet in another area.” The Fairfax County Park Authority is hosting a public meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Kings Park Library to discuss the idea and take input on a draft of the Monticello Park master plan. I believe Fairfax County needs more dog parks and open areas for dogs to run off leash. We probably have more dog pets than kids yet the number of playgrounds and playing fields outnumber dog parks greatly. Dogs are now forbidden on all public school grounds, farmer's markets and more and more places by official edict - it's about time pet owners got some space of their own.   more ›
