Police officers inspected trucks and other commercial vehicles Tuesday.
Members of the Fairfax County Police Department conducted a random motor carrier safety check Tuesday at the Springfield mall. In partnership with the Virginia State Police and the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office, FCPD officers inspected trucks and other commercial vehicles for mechanical safety, licensures for commercial drivers, among other things, PIO Lucy Caldwell said. Officers inspects trucks and commercial vehicles daily, but FCPD also arranges large-scale random safety checks in order to check on the safety of commercial motor carriers traveling the roadways of Fairfax County. The video comes four days after a possible 24th attack in Kingstowne.
Video of a man who may be the person some people call the Fairfax County serial groper has been released by Fairfax County police. The video is from a surveillance video taken around 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the HomeGoods store in the Kingstowne Towne Center, where a possible 24th attack in the series of assaults was reported to police. Fairfax County police are asking for the public's help in identifying the person in the video. Anyone with information should call 703-691-2131 or contact CrimeSolvers 866-411-TIPS. Event at Fairfax Corner honors 2013 National Crime Victims' Rights Week.
The Fairfax County Police Department's Victims Services Unit will host its first-ever 5k walk to raise awareness about crime victims in the county, and to honor 2013 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, the FCPD announced recently. The free event is hosted by the Victims Services Section of the Fairfax County Police Department and the Fairfax County Law Enforcement Foundation. It kicks off Sunday, April 21 at 4:30 p.m. at Fairfax Corner. A woman reportedly was grabbed Thursday afternoon in Kingstowne Towne Center. Police suspect the incident to be connected to previous serial groper incidents.
Fairfax County Police responded to a possible 24th report in the series of Springfield assaults around 3 p.m. Thursday, after a 31-year-old woman was assaulted by a man in the 5900 block of Kingstowne Towne Center. According to Public Information Officer Lucy Caldwell, the victim said she was followed by the man into the Home Goods store, which Caldwell said is distinctly different from the 23 incidents reported in the past six months where the victim were approached from behind on a public street. The man grabbed the victim then fled, according to police. Other shoppers attempted to help, but the man still got away from the area, Caldwell said Thursday afternoon. After hearing about serial groper incidents, C&J Security Corporation offered its services through Fairfax County Police Department free of charge.
A class of about 12 local women gathered at Crestwood Elementary School Saturday morning in Springfield to take a women's self defense class. In light of the series of unsolved assaults that have been occurring in the Springfield area since September, Frank Cresswell — president of C&J Security Corp. and a retired FCPD police officer — said he thought it was important to conduct a class in the Franconia District. Fairfax County Police have charged two Springfield men, after connecting them as suspects with a series of burglaries that took place Tuesday afternoon in the Burke area, according to a news release issued Friday afternoon. The two men, Andrew Kovch, 27, and Jimmy Le, 23, were charged with burglary, attempted burglary and grand larceny. Officers responded to a report of a burglary in the 9800 block of Lake Meadow Court Tuesday just before 1 p.m. The homeowner reported encountering a young man wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt and dark pants in the home. Urban Area Security Initiative Grant funded the three-week training course for police dogs and handlers.
“Danno” and his handler, Fairfax County Police Sgt. Joe Furman, have only known each three weeks and all of that time was spent training with other police dogs and handlers from Northern Virginia. In all, 15 dogs went through 120 hours of training at the first-ever regional train-the-trainer course held at the Fairfax County Police Operations Support Bureau in Annandale. The dogs were trained to detect anything from cocaine and marijuana to explosives by only using their noses and not relying on their handlers. Edwin Roessler will take over as acting chief as search for permanent Fairfax County police chief continues.
The Fairfax County Executive appointed Lt. Col. Edwin Roessler the acting chief of the Fairfax County Police Department on Tuesday making him the third chief the department has seen in five months. Roessler will take over for Lt. Col. James Morris, who has been serving as acting chief since October 2012, when former chief David Rohrer was appointed deputy county executive for public safety. Morris was named chief of the Town of Vienna police last month; he starts next week. Roessler will receive an annual salary of $183,815. He starts Saturday. Roessler’s appointment comes after 24 years of law enforcement. He began his career in the New York City Department of Investigation before moving to Fairfax County, where he has served as deputy …

Driver crossed double line Tuesday night.
Two adults and three children were injured in Burke Tuesday evening following a partial head-on collision on New England Woods Drive, near Burke Centre Parkway. According to a police spokesman, a 67-year-old male was traveling southbound on New England Woods Drive in a Honda Accord when he crossed the double line and partially collided with a Hyundai traveling northbound on New England Woods Drive around 7 p.m. The two adults and three children who were in the Hyundai were transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. A sobriety checkpoint is scheduled for the West Springfield Police District.
In preparation for residents celebrating St. Patrick's Day, Fairfax County police plan to include additional patrol units throughout the weekend for safety purposes, said Public Information Officer Lucy Caldwell. As a precaution, FCPD also has a sobriety checkpoint scheduled in the West Springfield Police District, which covers part of Annandale. Caldwell said FCPD is urging motorists to designate a non-drinking driver if they plan to consume alcoholic beverages this weekend. Motorists are asked to call 9-1-1 if they witness an impaired driver on the roads and provide dispatch with an exact location and the direction of travel to better assist FCPD.
