Gas Prices: Labor Day Weekend and Nearby College Towns

Hurricane Isaac could increase gas prices in Virginia. If you're traveling Labor Day Weekend or driving to college, here's what AAA says about gas prices.

Hurricane Isaac, which may hit the Gulf Coast late Tuesday or early Wednesday, has already shut down several refineries, could send gas prices up right before Labor Day weekend. But for now, it looks like Americans are still making plans to travel. The average fuel price in Fairfax County on Sunday was $3.80 — more than 20-cents higher than just a month ago and slightly higher than Friday's national average of $3.75. AAA defines the Labor Day holiday weekend as starting on Thursday and ending Monday, Sept. 3. AAA projects that 33 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend. “In the absence of strong economic growth that might fuel a significant boost in travel volume, it is an …

AAA defines the Independence Holiday as being from July 2 to July 8, but many travelers are planning to leave as early as Friday, June 29.  While holiday weekends typically bring higher gas prices, this year gas prices will fall. “Industry analysts believe prices at the pump will fall another 5 to 20 cents before the Independence  holiday – which is good news for the 35.5 million Americans AAA projects plan to travel by car,” said Martha M. Burke Resident Reports Gas Rewards Points Stolen

Woman warns against having a phone number connected to supermarket rewards accounts.

A woman reported someone used her phone number to access her supermarket gas rewards points to purchase discounted gas without her knowledge or permission. Burke resident Jennifer Milton had built up points through the popular local Giant gas rewards program. Through the program, Giant customers can earn points for every dollar they spend on groceries or prescriptions, with bonus points for purchasing certain combinations of items. The points are then redeemable at local participating Shell gasoline stations—100 points earns customers 10-cents off a gallon of gas. Milton noticed her points were missing recently and, through calls to Giant supermarkets, learned someone had used her points at a local Shell station. The person who used her …

Delivery Drivers Feel Pain at the Pump

Higher gas prices hit some local businesses in the pocketbook

Drivers and the small businesses that employ them are feeling a lot of pain at the gas pump and Northern Virginia is no exception. According to AAA, the current national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.98. While the average for the entire state of Virginia is lower than that, gas stations in Northern Virginia are priced higher. The most recent spike in oil prices can be attributed to unrest in Middle Eastern countries, but as summer approaches, experts say expect prices to continue climbing.  According to the U.S. Energy and Information Administration, fuel prices are up about 25 percent from 2010 and that could climb to 40 percent over last summer. Mosen, who preferred not to give his last name, owns Manginos Pizza, located…
