Sunday was day two of the 35th annual Burke Centre Festival.

Girl Scouts Rock the Mall: A Photo Gallery

Burke Girl Scouts joined a quarter-million others for Saturday's 100th anniversary celebration on the National Mall.

Girls from Burke's Girl Scout Troop 1665 participated Saturday in Rock the Mall, the national celebration of the Girl Scouts' 100th anniversary. Troops from all 50 states and Japan were represented in a crowd estimated at about 250,000.  According to the organizers, it was the largest gathering of Girl Scouts ever. Three stages with accompanying big screens were set-up around the base of the Washington Monument.  Groups quickly spread their blankets and chairs in what little shade was provided by the few trees on the grounds. Others followed the shadow cast by the monument to escape the sun's intensity. Scouts traded SWAPS—"Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere"—highlighting their hometown and the 100th anniversary, …

Burke Girl Scouts Celebrate 100th Anniversary

Two Cadets planned the local celebration honoring the national anniversary.

Girl Scouts representing Burke's Service Unit 52-7 sponsored a birthday celebration Saturday to honor the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA). Visitors were treated to demonstrations, crafts, exhibits and birthday cake at The Woods Community Center. Cailin Grant and Jasmine Chong, members of Cadet Troop 1665, planned and organized the celebration as their Silver Project. Service Unit 52-7 is comprised of girls from Lake Braddock Secondary School, Robinson Secondary School, and White Oaks, Terra Centre, Sangster, Cherry Run and Nativity Elementary Schools. Area troops honor 'Thinking Day' 100th anniversary celebration of Girl Scouting.

The South Central Fairfax Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital marked the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA at Springfield Mall on Saturday. The 100th Anniversary Thinking Day Celebration featured local Girl Scouts presenting displays, performances and crafts focusing on Girl Scout and Girl Guides information, history and opportunities around the world. Burke Centre Conservancy Proclaims 'Year of the Girl'

Ceremonial proclamation honors Burke area Girl Scouts on 100th anniversary of scouting.

Girl Scouts representing Burke's Service Unit 52-7 gathered Thursday at The Woods Community Center to be honored by the Burke Centre Conservancy Board of Trustees.   Denis Gulakowski, board president and trustee-at-large, read a ceremonial proclamation honoring the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA). GSUSA declared 2012 "The Year of the Girl" in recognition of the organization's centennial.  The Burke Centre Conservancy Board echoed that declaration, declaring March 2012 through March 2013 the "Year of the Girl" in Burke. Girl Scout Service Unit 52-7 is sponsoring a Centennial Birthday Party on March 24 between 11 and 2 at the Woods Community Center.  The public is invited for demonstrations, games and birthday cake. …
