Saunders is slated to take the mound Wednesday, three days after being traded to Baltimore by Arizona.
West Springfield High School graduate Joe Saunders will debut with the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday night, as they continue their four-game series against the Chicago White Sox. Saunders was traded on Sunday by the Diamondbacks, in return for reliever Matt Lindstrom. The Orioles are making a run for the playoffs, something they have not reached since 1997, and the team wanted a veteran pitcher who can help them get there. “We’ve liked Joe Saunders for quite awhile,” said Baltimore general manager Dan Duquette. “He’s pitched in the American League. He’s pitched in the playoffs. He’s pitched in a tough ballpark in Arizona. And we just like his experience," he said. "I also like the fact that he’s left-handed," added Duquette. "I think that …

Playing on a team will be much more friendly to wallets.
Student-athletes in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) no longer have to pay a $100 athletic fee to play on a team. The School Board eliminated the fee as part of the FY2013 Budget it passed last spring. The elimination of the fee will result in a revenue reduction of $1.7 million annually, FCPS estimates. Athletes formerly had to pay $100 per sport, though the fee was capped at $200 even if a student was on three school sports teams. It was waived for students who qualified for free and reduced lunch. The fee was in effect during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years. The $1.7 will be made up with additional transfer money from Fairfax County.

This is why we increase our property taxes and the county transfer to the schools? So families making $250k a year don't have to pay a $100 fee?? What bull. Any how many regular county employees had to be "eliminated" to pay for this? Truly, everybody is out for themselves around here, and they don't care who gets hurt for the most petty of things.   more ›
