Burke-Based Cindy's Custom Cards Growing

A hobby turns into an 'absorbing' business for Burke resident Cindy VanMeter.

It was a catalog from a scrapbooking company that launched Cindy VanMeter's growing business in Burke. VanMeter started her career as a secretary, and took time off to raise her first child at age 31. After her second child was born, she began working at Lake Braddock Secondary School as a clinic room aide but then had to quit to take care of her elderly mother. Like many women, VanMeter found that between working, raising kids, and taking care of family members, she was unable to make the time to pursue outside interests, like stamping. About six years ago, VanMeter said, a close friend retired and began working for Stampin’ Up, a company that sells scrapbooking and crafting supplies. Virginia Senate candidates send holiday cheer, family photos

On Friday, the campaigns of former Gov. George Allen (R) (also a former U.S. senator), and former Gov. Tim Kaine (D), who are running against each other for the U.S. Senate, sent holiday greetings to supporters. Holiday cards, messages and photos from politicians—especially those running for office—tend to get scrutinized more often than the average greeting. The official White House holiday card, which was started in 1953 with President Eisenhower, has made news this year, after it was attacked by Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential nominee because it was bereft of family or a holiday tree, and only showed the family dog, Bo. Palin told Fox News that she found it "odd" that the card emphasizes the dog instead of…
