A Mom's Musings

A Week of Natural Disasters

A family tries to remain calm as our area is dealt a double-whammy.

My eight-year-old daughter and I had just sat down to watch a movie when it hit.  At first I thought it was a truck going by, and then I was afraid a tree had fallen.  But when our house literally started shaking and things started to tumble off shelves, I knew it was an earthquake. My 10-year-old son and his friend were playing video games downstairs at the time.  Once I realized what was happening, I  ordered all of the kids under the pool table.  After what seemed like 10 minutes, but what in reality what was reported to have only lasted about 45 seconds, it was over.  I've lived in California, and I've been in my fair share of earthquakes.  But this one was by far the worst I've experienced.  More importantly, this was the first my kid…

Burke Weathers Irene

Hurricane fortunately a "non-event" for locale

Leaves covered the roadways Sunday morning in Burke, but otherwise it was business as usual for most residents. Shopping center and church parking lots were filling up by 10 a.m.  At Einstein Bagels on Old Keene Mill Road, the line was out the door.  Heather and Eric Swartz and their two young children were having breakfast. "It was windy last night, but not as bad as Isabel," said Heather.  The Swartz's say they lost power briefly, and they only knew because their digital clock was blinking. "There were leaves and small limbs in the roads and yards this morning," said Eric.  "It really was a non-event," added Heather. Heather's mother lives in Cape Cod, and she choose to move inland ahead of Irene.  Heather said she was surprised by New …

You are correct, R. Randa. We were focused on Burke, not Springfleld, and failed to ask Dominion VA Power about your area. Thank you for letting us know, and we're glad your power is back on. We may also have missed pockets of outages, and for that we apologize. We were happy to report that so many public facilities had power this morning, thus being available to people in the area without power.   more ›

In the wake of Hurricane Irene, William and Mary and Christopher Newport evacuate students

In our section of Fairfax Station and Clifton, all is well. I have to hand it to NOVEC. They work very hard on cutting down trees and branches on their easements. You can drive down the road and see where NOVEC's easements start and end simply by looking at the clearing they have done.   more ›

Say 'Good Night' to Irene with a Hurricane Cocktail

Some revelers hold hurricane parties with this favorite that many credit from New Orleans' Pat O'Brien's bar.

Near the Potomac River waterfront on King Street in Old Town, Alexandria, you'll find many businesses preparing for Hurricane Irene with sandbags at their doorsteps and welcoming last-minute tourists taking a look around. It's Friday afternoon, a day before Hurricane Irene is expected to blow into town. Just a few blocks from the water sits 219 Restaurant, a New Orleans-style bistro with ornate chandeliers and a jazz and piano bar upstairs. Manager Chris Taylor said he's worried about the possible impact the storm might have on the last few days of Alexandria Restaurant Week, an annual event held each August when local restaurants offer specials to locals and tourists. But if the weather turns ugly as expected, Taylor shared a recipe for …
