Wrong-Way Driver Caused 495 Crash that Closed Lanes Thursday

A Missouri driver hit three vehicles after entering the Northbound I-495 Express Lanes going the wrong way Thursday afternoon.

A driver got on I-495 traveling in the wrong direction Thursday and got into a head-on collision with another vehicle, causing a crash that closed the southbound lanes. Police got reports of a silver Chevrolet Impala traveling in the wrong direction in the northbound 495 Express Lanes around 1 p.m., according to WTOP. The driver, a 25-year-old Missouri man, suddenly exited the Express Lanes into the main southbound Beltway traffic. The Impala hit a trailer being towed by a pickup truck and then collided with a Toyota Corolla head-on. The crash caused the two cars to then hit a Honda. The drivers of the Impala, Toyota and Honda were all taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital. WTOP reports that alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash. Police …

State Police: Be Aware of Express Lanes During Morning Commute

Police have responded to four crashes since new lanes opened Saturday, all around the Springfield-area northbound Express Lanes entrance.

If your commute includes I-495, Virginia State Police encourage commuters to plan in advance, especially during the Monday morning drive. Virginia State Police have responded to four crashes since the new lanes opened early Saturday morning, two of which have resulted in non-life threatening injuries. All four crashes occurred in about the same location: The northbound entrance of the I-495 Express Lanes near Springfield. As northbound motorists come upon the change in traffic patterns at the Express Lanes entrance, they have swerved or made lane changes to avoid the toll lanes, Virginia State Police said. State Police say that drivers are also stopping or backing up in an attempt to avoid the Express Lanes and to get into the general …

Hi Julie. I believe what that means is that if you have a bumper mounted transponder and you have at least three people in your car, you need to go online or give them a call before you hit the express lanes to take adavantage of the free ride for HOV-3 cars. I assume the bumper mounted transponders don't have a HOV-3 switch like the E-ZPass Flex transponders so you need to let them know you have…   more ›

New E-ZPass Users Could Get Two Weeks Free on Express Lanes

Commuters who buy transponders in September 2012 could win two free weeks of travel in January.

Commuters who sign up for an E-ZPass transponder during September will be eligible for two weeks of free travel when the I-495 Express Lanes open later this year. All travelers who wish to use the express lanes when they open will need an E-ZPass or an E-ZPass Flex, said Pierce Coffee, marketing director at Transurban-Fluor, and the promotion is an incentive for new users to get their tags before the lanes are operational. "People are busy with their daily lives, so they wait until the last minute to get their E-ZPass, and then they might not be able to get it in time for [the lanes'] opening," she said. “So what we want to do is entice people to get their EZ-Pass before the road is open later this year so that they have it — it's in their…

Fairfax Board Opposes Additional E-ZPass Fees

Supervisors voted Tuesday to draft a letter formally opposing a $1 monthly fee.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to formally oppose an additional $1 fee on E-ZPass transponders under consideration by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The proposed monthly fee would cover administrative and operations costs, as the number of users is expected to double in the next few years because of opening toll roads, according to an email to E-ZPass customers. “It is unfair to toll road users because tolls are already high and, particularly with the Dulles Toll Road, those tolls are expected to go much higher,” said Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust in his board matter. Foust also worried that the additional fee would discourage drivers from using E-ZPass at all, causing increased congestion at…
