Wrong-Way Driver Caused 495 Crash that Closed Lanes Thursday

A Missouri driver hit three vehicles after entering the Northbound I-495 Express Lanes going the wrong way Thursday afternoon.

A driver got on I-495 traveling in the wrong direction Thursday and got into a head-on collision with another vehicle, causing a crash that closed the southbound lanes. Police got reports of a silver Chevrolet Impala traveling in the wrong direction in the northbound 495 Express Lanes around 1 p.m., according to WTOP. The driver, a 25-year-old Missouri man, suddenly exited the Express Lanes into the main southbound Beltway traffic. The Impala hit a trailer being towed by a pickup truck and then collided with a Toyota Corolla head-on. The crash caused the two cars to then hit a Honda. The drivers of the Impala, Toyota and Honda were all taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital. WTOP reports that alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash. Police …

Three Killed in Thursday Accident on I-495 Ramp

Pickup truck rear ends tractor trailer at Springfield Interchange.

Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash Thursday night on the Springfield Interchange. Three people died in the accident, which occurred around 7 p.m. Thursday on the I-495 Beltway flyover ramp that leads to I-95 South.  "A tractor-trailer in the travel lane was stopped in traffic when it was rear-ended by a pickup truck. All three occupants of the pickup truck died at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash," Virginia State Police said in a release Thursday night. The cause of the crash is still being determined. As of 8:30 p.m., the flyover ramp remained closed and traffic is being diverted.

Fatal Crash at I-495 Braddock Exit

Crash snarls northbound lanes on I-495.

A fatal crash occurred at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, involving a box truck in the northbound lanes of I-495 at Exit 54/Braddock Road. After the accident, Richard L. Edwards, 24, of Woodbridge, was taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.  Virginia State Police responded to the scene of the two-vehicle crash at 2:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-495 at Braddock Road, in Fairfax County. Corinne Geller, a spokeswoman for VSP, said that a Edwards was driving a box truck north on I-495 and did not stop in time for a work zone safety vehicle that stopped in the right travel lane.
