Patrick Moran, son of U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, resigned from father's reelection campaign Wednesday. Police began a criminal investigation of Patrick Moran on Thursday.
ARLINGTON, Va. -- Following the release of a video this week that shows Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran's son, Patrick, apparently talking about ways to skirt voter identification laws, the Arlington County Police Department has opened a criminal investigation into the matter. "Every component is under investigation right now," police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. "It's very early." The video, released by conservative activist James O'Keefe — whose methods and productions have been called into question in the past — shows the younger Moran responding to requests for advice on how the unidentified cameraman can "vote for" 100 inactive voters. Patrick Moran, after suggesting the person's energy would be better used in more traditional — …

Patrick Moran said he resigned in an email Wednesday.
Patrick Moran, son of Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, has resigned from his father's reelection campaign. "Effective immediately, I have resigned from the Moran for Congress campaign," Patrick Moran said in an email. The resignation follows the release of a near 27-minute video filmed in various locations in Arlington's Courthouse community in which the younger Moran apparently talks with someone posing as a supporter about skirting new voter identification laws. The video was released by conservative activist James O'Keefe, whose work has been discredited in the past. In it, the videographer continuously prompts the younger Moran for advice on how best to "vote for" 100 names of inactive voters from Northern Virginia to Richmond. Moran, …

Barn manager Allison Mills asked the Bureau of Land Management for an increase in boardered horses. BLM declined.
Meadowood Barn manager Allison Mills is barely holding on. Last week, Ranger, a 29-year-old quarter horse, passed away, and with another boarder soon moving to Fredericksburg, the number of horses at the barn has dwindled to 17. Mills, whose annual contract was renewed in April by the Bureau of Land Management, is awaiting a final decision on how BLM plans to proceed with the redevelopment of the Lorton barn. And until BLM makes a decision on its Environmental Assessment and barn renovations are complete, she is contractually restricted from replacing horses. "I don't know how I make ends meet, but miraculously it happens," Mills told Patch. "We have no savings. Every boarder pays me a security deposit of $700, and if every boarder left, …

Community, Fort Belvoir Reaffirm Partnership at Springfield BridgeWalk
Fort Belvoir soldiers, Springfield-area business owners, local politicians, school groups and citizens marched across Veterans Bridge Tuesday evening for the 11th annual Springfield BridgeWalk. Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay organizes the event each year to affirm the support of the local community for those who serve in the military, especially those at Fort Belvoir and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency at Fort Belvoir North. The BridgeWalk began in 2002 to commemorate the lives lost on 9/11 and to thank the men and women of the armed forces, he said. The Kings Park Concert Band played marches and patriotic tunes, as those who marched then gathered at American Legion Post 176 for the annual signing of the Army Community …

Democrats, Republicans and hundreds of private sector government contractors gathered at the Crystal City Gateway Marriott on Monday afternoon to protest sequestration, which would cut $500 billion of federal defense spending.
ARLINGTON — U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly on Monday called on Congress to cancel its upcoming five-week recess in order to solve looming $500 billion defense cuts that could cost Northern Virginia thousands of jobs. That sentiment was echoed by Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce President Jim Corcoran, who said the federal government shouldn't balance its budget on the backs of the defense industry. And Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, who arrived late to the "Stop Sequestration" rally thanks to a flight delay, said afterward he supported Connolly's idea. "Sequestration" is the name given to $1 trillion federal budget cuts that will happen in January if Congress doesn't reach a compromise. Half of that would affect the defense industry, which …

Senator from South Dakota throws weight behind Romney, Allen and Murray.
U.S. Sen. John Thune campaigned for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and Virginia candidates Friday during a stop at the Republican “Victory Center” in Springfield. Thune, of South Dakota, stumped for U.S. Senate candidate George Allen, who faces Tim Kaine in the general election, and 8th Congressional District Republican Patrick Murray, who is running against incumbent Democrat Congressman Jim Moran. “Virginia is ground zero in this presidential campaign and in all these other campaigns up and down the ballot this year,” Thune told volunteers and supporters. “It’s going to be critical that we get the vote out.” He added: “We need to change direction for this country, and the only way we’re going to do that is to elect …

Moran is Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies
U.S. Rep Jim Moran (D-8th) said Tuesday the Bureau of Land Management would see reductions in government-appropriated funds if horse operations cease during renovation of the barn at the Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area in Lorton. Moran said BLM's lack of communication is inexcusable. "BLM has not been responsive because the website was down, and inexcusably so," Moran told Patch at Great Harvest Bread in Lorton. "I'm confident that they'll listen, because we have substantial leverage and I control their funding. I'm the ranking member of the Interior Appropriations Committee... Unless they want to have their funding cut, I would assume they would want to work with us. It's a reasonable assumption. "We have a responsibility to…

High Court ruled 5-4 today to uphold what some call 'Obamacare.'
Area leaders were quick to react today to the news that the Supreme Court upheld President Barack Obama's health reform law. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R): "Today's Supreme Court ruling is extremely disappointing for Virginia and for America. The PPACA will create a costly and cumbersome system that will impair our country's ability to recover from these challenging economic times, infringes on our citizen's liberties, will harm small businesses, and will impose dramatic unfunded mandates on Virginia and all states. Simply put, this is a blow to freedom. America needs market-based solutions that give patients more choice, not less." (For the governor's full statement, visit his Web site.) On his Twitter feed, the governor wrote: "Simply …
