More than 40,000 children in Fairfax County qualify for free or reduce school lunches, according to Braddock District Supervisor John Cook. "Poverty threatens the academic success of many children in our community," he said. In response, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department have partnered to collect backpacks for this year’s 10th annual Backpack Drive. Last year, more than 2,000 backpacks were filled with school supplies and delivered to students in kindergarten through high school in time for the new school year. Four local parks included in the plan.
The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVRPA) recently released a draft of its five-year strategic plan. (The draft can be downloaded to the right.) NVRPA manages four parks in the immediate area: Residents are invited to a public meeting to discuss the plan at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the NVRPA Headquarters at 5400 Ox Road in Fairfax Station. FCPA Director John Dargle will meet with area residents on Sept. 20.
Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) Director John Dargle will hold a Listening Forum in the Springfield District at Hidden Pond Nature Center on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. According to the FCPA, Dargle will host an informal conversation about park-related concerns and issues. Residents are invited to exchange ideas and discuss possibilities. The forums are held throughout Fairfax County to "share thoughts and concerns and exchange ideas." Items of specific interest to Springfield District residents include the Burke Lake dam project and its effect on park users, and the November 6 Park Bond referendum which, if approved, would provide $75 million for park capital improvements.

Construction on the dam is set to begin in September and last several months.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), the state agency responsible for maintaining Lake Burke, will begin required work on the dam in September in order to meet new state standards. Work is expected to last several months. The Fairfax County Park Authority reports VDGIF is currently notifying neighbors regarding the impacts and effects of the rehabilitation project. "The Park Authority is working closely with VDGIF to assess its impact on park activities and to ensure that wherever possible, public access continues," said Judy Pederson, Park Authority (FCPA) Public Information officer, in a press release. Online Department of Transportation survey seeks resident input on transportation options.
Residents have two more days to weigh in on the future of transportation in Fairfax County. The 2050 Countywide Transit Network Study, launched last month by the Fairfax County department of transportation to determine how public transit system expansion plans can best meet the county’s goals for long-term economic growth, will close to the public Aug. 10. "An objective of the study is to develop an inter-connected rapid transit system network that gets people where they need to go that connects with transit in Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun and Prince William [counties]," said Tom Burke, a senior transportation planner in the county’s DOT, at a public meeting in Fairfax last month.
