Lynbrook Elementary Receives Healthy School Award

Springfield school has won the award for 12 consecutive years.

Lynbrook Elementary School has done it again.  Last week for the 12th consecutive year, the Springfield school received the Healthy School Award from the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) and its partner Sodexo. Lynbrook earned the award for having the largest number of students in the MCM sponsored Healthy Kids Fun Run, held each fall in Arlington.  In 2011 Lynbrook registered 300 students for the one-mile fun run. "Since the Healthy Kids Fun Ran began, the teachers and parents of Lynbrook Elementary have taken an active role motivating their students to participate," said Angela Huff, deputy director of MCM. "The school serves as a model for school participation."  MCM Director Rick Nealis and Miles the bulldog mascot visited Lynbrook, …

Springfield Teacher Prepares for His 74th Marathon

Steve Coffman is preparing to run his 35th annual Boston Marathon in April.

Steve Coffman was in the right place at the right time. The place was Hawaii, where Coffman was stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps. The year was 1972, and American Frank Shorter had just won the Olympic gold medal in marathon running in Munich. The long-distance running craze spread throughout the nation, and Coffman found training in Hawaii especially appealing. “I owe a lot of it to the perfect place to run,” said Coffman. “I could get out and just enjoy the beautiful outdoors of Hawaii – the ocean, the mountains. It was just enjoyable.” Coffman, now a physical education teacher for special-needs children at Saratoga Elementary School in Springfield and Hollin Meadows Science and Math Focus Elementary School, dove right in to the sport…

Finishing the Marine Corps Marathon

Local runner results, and an overview of the 36th Marine Corps Marathon.

Angeline Hannachi, Laura DeFraia-Colee and Victor Tran began running for different reasons.  Sunday they ran with the same purpose: Complete their first Marine Corps Marathon (MCM).  They had begun their training with Potomac River Running in Burke and Reston. Victor Tran, who lives in Annandale, had set his goal to finish in 04:15.  He was not far off, completing in 04:31:56.  Reston's Laura DeFraia-Colee planned to keep it simple -- "run each mile at a nice steady pace, keep a positive attitude through all 26.2 miles, and hopefully finish!"  Finish, she did; in 06:39:29. Angeline Hannachi of Fairfax decided one year ago to train for the MCM.  Today she finished the race in 04:41:05. The finishing chip times were obtained from the Marine …

Running the Marine Corps Marathon

They began running for different reasons, but Sunday they ran with the same goal -- finish their first Marine Corps Marathon.

The 36th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on Sunday is limited to 30,000 participants. Yet registration sold out in record time -- 28 hours, four minutes. Three first-time MCM runners who trained with Potomac River Running (Burke and Reston) gave an overview of their preparation. Angeline Hannachi of Fairfax (first marathon) I began running last year in order to further my weight loss goals. Prior to July 2010, I had never run more than a couple miles at a time, and I have always struggled with my weight. Between being a single mother, working full time and going to school part time, my weight had ballooned to 240 by the end of 2009. On Jan. 1, 2010, I determined that I would lose the weight once and for all. Since then I've shed about 80 …

It's great to see the MCM still going strong after 36 years. I ran the first one in 1976 and we had just 1200 runners. It truely is the "People's Marathon", no prize money for professional runners. The Marines do an awesome job taking care of all the runners.   more ›
