Joe Biden and Paul Ryan Clash in Fiery VP Debate

Rep. Paul Ryan, Vice President Joe Biden spar in fiery debate, talking economy, abortion, Iran and religion in Thursday night debate.

Vice President Joe Biden and Republican VP candidate U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin faced off Thursday night in a heated debate that covered foreign wars, tax reform, healthcare, abortion, and their shared faith in the Catholic Church.  During the debate, broadcast live from Centre College in Danville, Ky., Biden flexed his experience with foreign policy when answering questions about ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, nuclear arms in Iran and whether to send troops to Syria. “The last thing America needs is to get in a ground war in the Middle East,” Biden said. Ryan called the Obama administration’s foreign policy “chaotic,” criticizing the lack of security present during the September attack on the consulate in Benghazi, Libya, …

Tell us: Who performed better at Thursday's debate? Did the debate strengthen or hurt either campaign?

Vice President Joe Biden and Republican hopeful U.S. Rep Paul Ryan engaged in their first and only debate Thursday night in Kentucky. The debate fell a week after the first debate between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, in Denver, and just days before their next meeting Oct. 16  at Hofstra University in New York. Viewers in Virginia had different opinions about what topics covered tonight would matter most to voters in the Commonwealth. Other Virginia residents interviewed after the debate said the candidates' differing views on abortion stood out. Tell us: Who performed better at Thursday's debate? Pre-Debate Advice for Paul Ryan, Joe Biden

Local image consultant weighs in on how Vice President Joe Biden and Congressman Paul Ryan should present themselves in the vice presidential debate Thursday, Oct. 11.

Vice President Joe Biden and Republican candidate Congressman Paul Ryan will take the stage at Thursday night’s vice presidential debate at Centre College in Danville, KY. What does it take for both vice presidential candidates to project confidence during the debates? Northern Virginia image consultant Anne Morgan says both Ryan and Biden need to present themselves as “authoritative, trustworthy, and credible” during Thursday’s debate. Morgan, owner of Color and Image Insight, says the navy suit is the standard for presenting that image to potential voters. “I would say that Al Gore got advice to wear earth tones once upon a time and I’m not sure that was the best advice for his coloring or for his presentation,” Morgan recalled. “…

If I were Biden, I would be all over how politically and ideologically split the Republican ticket is between Romney and Ryan. And with Romney's mad dash to the center, away from everything that he has been campaigning on up until last week, is even more of a mad dash away from what Paul believes in. I would be asking Paul how it feels to have compromised your character to stand shoulder to …   more ›

Rep. Connolly: Mitt Romney's Comments Make Him 'Unfit for Office'

Democratic Congressman made the statement Tuesday to residents of the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield.

Northern Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th) said Tuesday that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's recently released comments in a controversial videotape make him "unfit for office." Connolly spoke to about 75 residents of the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield during a campaign appearance. Romney's comments, secretly taped without his knowledge, featured a controversial statement in which he said that 47 percent of the electorate do not pay income taxes and are dependent on the government and consequently support President Obama's candidacy. Connolly characterized the statement as "dangerous." "That's very dangerous thinking, and I think that alone suggests Mitt is not fit for that office," said Connolly…

Gov. McDonnell to Speak Tuesday Evening at Republican National Convention

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is expected to receive the formal nominee nod Tuesday evening at the Republican National Convention.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is expected to be formally nominated Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.  Romney and running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin originally were to be nominated Monday, but GOP Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who opened the convention Monday afternoon, immediately put it in recess until Tuesday, due to Hurricane Isaac.  The storm has shortened the convention. In a roll-call vote, convention delegates will formally put Romney and Ryan on the November ballot, to face President Obama and Vice President Biden. Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell garnered a key speakers spot. He is scheduled to address the convention Tuesday night during primetime, before Ann Romney and …

The Republican vice presidential candidate spoke at a rally at West Springfield High School, after a campaign stop in Richmond.

An ebullient crowd greeted vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan at West Springfield High School in West Springfield. As a who's who of state and local Republicans preceded Ryan in decrying what they termed failed Obama policies, the audience continually vocalized their support. "This administration [Obama's] has the worst record of any in history regarding human rights and religious freedom," said Congressman Frank Wolf (R-10th), who co-chairs the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission. He spoke specifically about religious persecution in China and genocide in Darfur, saying the Obama administration has turned a blind eye to the issues.
