Since the Fairfax County Police Department began its Summer HEAT -- Help Eliminate Aggressive Traffic -- campaign on June 15, officers have issued more than 2,000 summonses for unsafe or aggressive driving behaviors. Violations include failure to pay full time and attention, texting while operating a vehicle, having a television visible to a driver and wearing earphones while driving. According to the Fairfax County Police: The campaign will continue through August, ending on Labor Day. Fairfax County Police report a 24-year-old Woodbridge man died Tuesday at about 11:45 p.m. following a crash on Leesville Boulevard in the Springfield area. Paul Wickwire was driving his 1998 Ford Explorer east on Leesville Boulevard near Hinton Street when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and ran off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a fire hydrant and rolled over. The driver was ejected and died at the scene of the crash. Detectives are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. Preliminarily, they believe speed may have been a contributing factor.
