Board of Supervisors Recognizes Lake Braddock Secondary Girls Cross Country

Ceremony was held Tuesday at Board of Supervisors meeting at Fairfax County Government Center.

The Board of Supervisors recognized the Lake Braddock Secondary School Girls Cross Country Team as the state champion and Sophie Chase for being selected as the Gatorade Virginia Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. See more about the team on MileStat.com.

Lake Braddock's Sophie Chase Named Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year

Chase honored for athleticism, academics and character.

Lake Braddock's Sophie Chase has been named 2011-12 Gatorade Virginia Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. An ESPNHS team managed the selection process, which was based on "athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character," according to ESPNHS. Chase began her running career late, by most standards.  “Although she did not start her running career until ninth grade, Sophie has excelled due to her outstanding work ethic and attention to detail,” Lake Braddock head coach Mike Mangan told ESPNHS. Lake Braddock's Sophie Chase Finishes 11th in Nationals

Chase only :23 seconds away from first place in her second national competiton.

Sophie Chase, a junior at Lake Braddock Secondary School, finished 11th in the 2011 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals (FLCCC) in San Diego on Saturday. Her time of 17:45 in the 5.0 kilometer race was 23 seconds behind first-place winner Molly Seidel of Hartland, Wis. This was Chase's second consecutive trip to nationals. She qualified for the race in November with a time of 17:06, the third-fastest in Virginia history for 5,000 meters, at the 33rd Annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships South Regional in Charlotte, N.C. Sean McGorty, a junior at Chantilly High School, and Ahmed Bile, a senior at Annandale High School, finished 10th and 12th respectively. McGorty ran the 5,000 meters in 15:28, and Bile in 15:30…

Lake Braddock's Chase Wins State Championship

Junior wins girls' cross country race at Great Meadow with record time.

With a mile to go in the Virginia AAA State Championship girls' race, Lake Braddock Secondary School Junior Sophie Chase was right where she wanted to be.  Chase had one more push to shake the last competitor in her pursuit of the title. As she approached the stair step hills that lead into the third mile of the course at Great Meadow, Chase charged, gradually drawing away from her competition. By the time she reached the final straightaway, her lead had grown substantially.  Smiling a little as she crossed the finish for her first Cross Country State Championship, she was then greeted with a surprise.
