Three Killed in Thursday Accident on I-495 Ramp

Pickup truck rear ends tractor trailer at Springfield Interchange.

Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash Thursday night on the Springfield Interchange. Three people died in the accident, which occurred around 7 p.m. Thursday on the I-495 Beltway flyover ramp that leads to I-95 South.  "A tractor-trailer in the travel lane was stopped in traffic when it was rear-ended by a pickup truck. All three occupants of the pickup truck died at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash," Virginia State Police said in a release Thursday night. The cause of the crash is still being determined. As of 8:30 p.m., the flyover ramp remained closed and traffic is being diverted.

Springfield Interchange Overnight Detours Jan. 24

All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the exit to  I-95 south from I-495 west, Inner Loop, at the Springfield Interchange overnight on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Starting at 9 p.m., crews will close the left lane on the exit ramp and progress to closing the entire I-95 south exit ramp after midnight at which time the below detour route will be in effect.  Detour: I-95 south traffic will be detoured to Exit 170B onto I-395 north and take Exit 2B, Edsall Road west, follow signage back to I-95 south. The detour may add an additional 15-20 minutes onto a trip during overnight hours.  At midnight, a left lane on I-495 west, Inner Loop, before the Springfield Interchange will also be closed and after midnight crews will close all …
