Between Jan. 1 and March 31, Vornado Realty Trust spent $8.8 million on the Springfield Mall renovation, which is more than the company has spent on any other projects in its pipeline, according to the Washington Business Journal. The transformation of the Springfield Mall into the Springfield Town Center is expected to cost Vornado $225 million by the middle of 2014. New video gives insight into shopping mall scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2014.
Vornado Realty Trust has provided a preview video of the Springfield Town Center which is expected to be completed by summer 2014. The new video — provided on the Vornado and shopping center Web sites — elaborates on the Springfield area and new features shoppers can expect when the center opens next year. Some features, Springfield and surrounding area residents should expect, include a multi-screen cinema, a new main entrance with valet parking, a health club, 700-seat food court, multiple kids' areas throughout the property and more than 7,600 parking spaces. Owner Michael Schear said the newly transformed Springfield Mall will service an 'affluent and underserved trade area in the south side of the D.C. Metro area.'

Because of reconstruction, many of the mall's stores have relocated to Springfield or Alexandria.
With the redevelopment of the Springfield Mall underway, of course many of the previous stores are relocated until the Springfield Town Center reopens mid-2014. Site plan depicts new lay out of the mall redevelopment.
The redevelopment of the Springfield Mall is currently progressing on schedule according to Mara Ooguin, a spokesperson for what will soon be the Springfield Town Center. The demolition of the Springfield Mall began Nov. 26. All of the mall's stores closed back in July except for Macy's, JCPenney and Target. The mall's redevelopment and transformation into what will be an upscale town center is part of a three-year effort between the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Vornado Realty Trust, who owns the mall, and a handful of community organizations in the Springfield area. All stores except three anchor stores to close in July.
The new Springfield Town Center will feature a health club, a movie theater and a "restaurant row" of between eight and ten restaurants, according to Mike McClanahan, chief of staff for Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay. Springfield Mall will close all stores except the anchor department stores come July, according to tenants at the mall.
