Family, friends, yourself?
Black Friday — the day after Thanksgiving — seems to start earlier every year. Stores (big and small) offer huge discounts, and crowds wait for hours for the doors to open. And when they do, watch out for a stampede. Tony Walter, a waiter at Busboys and Poets in Shirlington, will spend Thanksgiving evening shopping at the Walmart on Richmond Highway and the Target store at Potomac Yard. "I'm shopping for me, and I already know exactly what I'm getting," Walter told Patch. "I only started doing this last year, because I had the extra cash and I realized that I could get a 40-inch flatscreen television at Walmart for $200 and an all-in-one printer for $35." Walter, 27, hopes to buy an Xbox 360 with a wired Internet connection ($229) and an …

Target, Kmart included in turkey day sales. Is it too early to start Black Friday shopping on Thanksgiving Day?
If you have a black belt in Black Friday shopping, listen up: Area big-box retailers are gearing up to dazzle bargain hunters even earlier this year — starting Thanksgiving Day, right after you put away the pumpkin pie. Walmart, Target and Kmart are planning all-out holiday shopping assaults. Why doze off in a turkey slump watching football when you can be out taking care of holiday shopping business? Walmart will offer, beginning at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, holiday gifts for the entire family while supplies last. That includes an electric scooter for $79, a steam mop for $39 or men's jeans for $9.50. (Why do mom and dad always get the boring presents?) Target's deals begin an hour later, at 9 p.m. According to an ad leaked online, the …

Witches, princesses and Big Bird are popular nationally; local kids are looking for creepy, gory costumes.
This year, trick-or-treaters, pampered (and/or tortured) pets and partygoers all over the U.S. will dress up in spooky, adorable, cute or funny costumes and hit the town for Halloween. Some local kids are looking for creepier costumes this year, said Harold Grabes, general manager of the Party City on Frontier Drive. “This season, they’re going more gory and haunted,” Grabes said. “For every kid that asks for something like Luigi, I get about ten more asking for the Grim Reaper.” Ryan Whalen, a sales representative at Target on Richmond Highway, said he has received a lot of calls from people who are interested in Avengers-related costumes for their children. However, Whalen said Target does stock some of their other commonly popular …

Party City and Target are getting requests for more gory costumes and Avengers costumes.
It’s that time of year again. The time when you can put your old self to the side and take on a totally new personality or character. Halloween is right around the corner, and it’s not too early to think about what you want to be on the scariest night of the year. Like every year, many local stores have a list of costumes for all ages. However, there are some Halloween costume ideas that seem to be more popular than others this year. Harold Grabes, general manager of the Party City on Frontier Drive, said even the kids are looking for creepier costumes this season. “This season, they’re going more gory and haunted,” Grabes said. “For every kid that asks for something like Luigi, I get about 10 more asking for the Grim Reaper.” Grabes said …

Major renovations scheduled to begin in July will leave only the anchor stores intact.
Springfield Mall will close all stores except the anchor department stores come July, according to tenants at the mall. Macy's, Target and JCPenney will remain open as New York-based Vornado Realty Trust begins a two-year renovation of the property. Shopper Mary Yastishock said she remembered Princess Diana’s 1985 visit to Springfield Mall. “It’s changed so much since then,” she said. "For two decades, coming here has been like watching a neighborhood die.” Her college-aged daughter Alex agreed. “I remember coming as a child to visit Santa and ride the carousel, then as a teen to the movie theaters,” she said. “This used to be a really happening place.” “Now we come to see which stores have closed,” said Mary. “It seems forever they’ve …
