Local schools recently took time to recognize and honor veterans.
As we pause during this busy holiday season, we’re reminded to give thanks for so many blessings in our lives. It is befitting to reflect on the people we feel such gratitude toward. Recently, many of the local schools took time to recognize and honor our country’s veterans, both those currently serving as well as those who have served in past conflicts. Writing letters to soldiers in overseas locations…designing American flags made special with 7 year-old children’s handprints…a collaboration of Scouts and VFW Bugle Corp …chorus and band presentations…a hand bell choir…musical performances by retired members of the Marine Band…special lunches …the wearing of red, white and blue or clothing representing the various military branches…the …

Fairfax County government closed Monday in observance of Veterans Day. County schools are open.
Some Fairfax County offices and services will be closed on Monday in observance of Veterans Day. Here's the lowdown: Fairfax County Government is closed. Fairfax County Public Schools are open. Fairfax County courts will be closed. Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) programs, activities and facilities, including Fastran services, will be closed. Fairfax County Public Libraries are closed Sunday and Monday. Libraries will re-open Tuesday. RECenters will be open on a regular schedule on Monday. Community centers will be closed. Local residents will commemorate Veterans Day.
On Sunday, Veterans Day, Americans will honor military veterans with ceremonies and tributes. Nov. 11 (the legal public holiday for Veterans Day), falls on a Sunday. For most federal employees, Monday, Nov. 12, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. Veterans Day has its roots in Armistice Day, which was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. Seven years later, President Calvin Coolidge issued another proclamation to commemorate Armistice Day with ceremonies. Armistice Day was officially changed in 1956 to Veterans Day.
